Communications Director
Dogwood Initiative was recognized as one of Canada's most innovative and effective non-profit organizations. The Dogwood model combines large-scale citizen engagement and recognition of Indigenous land rights with a non-partisan political approach, both of which are underscored by a commitment to continual improvement through sophisticated testing and analytics.In my role, I managed two communications professionals and played a key strategic role for the organization.• Media: Managed media database and built relationships with key journalists. Developed key messages, wrote media releases and acted as spokesperson in radio, television and print interviews. • Planning: Developed and implemented strategic communications plans, both annually and at a program- and project-specific level. • Writing/Editing: Maintained consistent tone, style and quality across all external communications, including op-eds, blogs, website content, supporter communications, annual report, social media and printed campaign materials. • Supporter communications: Effectively managed communications with 140,000 supporters to continue growing support base, increase engagement and elicit financial support.• Polling: Designed and commissioned polling on key campaign issues.• Fundraising: Wrote direct mail and online fundraising appeals four times a year. Donations from individuals increased 38% between 2010 and 2011.• Social media: Increased engagement with Facebook and Twitter accounts. Quadrupled Facebook following in 2012. • Public speaking: Speaking engagements included: a student audience at GLOBE 2012, the B.C. Teachers' Federation, the Canadian Environmental Grantmakers Network, the Boreal Learning Network and the Vancouver Foundation.• Human resources: Conducted hiring and performance evaluations, set and managed work plans and acted as resource for communications staff.
