Senior Storage Sre
As Linkedin continue to grow, there was an initiative to create multiple active datacenters to help with performance and high availability. I was involved on the storage side by going out to Virginia, Texas, Oregon, and Singapore to do the physical installs, initial configurations, and firmware upgrades. As the team continued to grow in both the US and India, I continued to mentor new members including going flying out to Bangalore to train members there. I created documentation to help with training and to use as reference. I created documentation for all our Block storage platforms as well as for host procedures for Solaris and Linux before handing off to our customers. We continued to move forward with PureStorage arrays and picked up VPLEX to give our VNX platforms more availability. I learned these platforms, trained other parts of the team on them, and created documentation. At some point, our tean started moving in new directions and developed environments for GPFS and NVMesh. Through these, I got to experience Software Defined Storage in the Block and File spaces. As our team and environments grew, we needed automation help reduce toil. At first, I worked with our automation SME in order to help create scripts, such as a script for to run Solaris commands needed before handing off to the customer. Eventually, I learned a bit of Python myself so I could make modifications to the current scripts as well as create a few tools for myself. More recently, I learned a bit of Puppet and created the Puppet automations for setting up new server configs for NVMesh.I spent a lot of time testing new hardware and upgrading within the same platform or migrating to new hardware. I also was able to continue to build relationships with my vendors, customers, and datacenter techs. In the pandemic, my role went from on-site to remote and then to hybrind on-site. As the company and my organization grew, I got rebranded to Storage Site Reliability Engineer.
Storage Engineer
After learning the basics as an associate, I took on the responsibility of taking the lead for fulfilling the quarterly request for block storage from the database admins. I also started helping out with any extra work needed at a variety of datacenters from LA to Chicago to Atlanta.I learned basic operations for File platforms that we employed such as Data Domain, Isilon, and NetApp which helped with on call duties. Around this time, we started testing out other Block platforms such as Pure, XtremIO, and Infinidat. As our team grew, I started actively mentoring new team members in block storage to help them succeed. I gave them training to understand our processes and procedures, guided them through our environment, and answering questions and helping out during their on call duties.
Associate Storage Engineer
From my previous experience at EMC with the VNX platform, I was brought into Linkedin to be the SME for their VNX environment. I learned the basics of the storage environment at Linkedin and began taking on responsibilities outside of VNX. I got experience working with the VMAX, Cisco MDS switches, Solaris, and Linux. From this time, I started building relationships with database admins and datacenter techs which helped my work go more smoothly.
Implementation Delivery Engineer
This position is continuation of the Customer Engineer position I worked previously. Our responsibilities were split with maintenance contract work going to the Corrective Maintenance group and billable work going to Implementation Delivery group. My responsibilities include the installations and hardware upgrades from the Customer Engineer role, as well as basic implementation and configuration normally assigned to the Implementation Specialists role. The goal of this hybrid role was to create one point of contact for the customer to go from install to configuration of EMC's arrays. In my time as an IDE, I've expanded my knowledge of EMC's platforms to include back up and recovery appliances such as Recoverpoint, Avamar, and Data Domain, as well as the next generations of EMC storage, the VMAX and the VNX.I have gained a particular amount of experience with the VNX platform, being one of the first take training and one of the first to install and configure the VNX in the Western Region.
Customer Engineer
My primary role during my time as a Customer Engineer was to be an Account Manager. I was given a set of Commercial and Enterprise accounts and tasked with the responsibility of physical installations and hardware upgrades. I was also tasked with all activities within the customer's maintenance contract including microcode upgrades, enabling software, corrective maintenance, and field change orders.During this period I gained experience with EMC's mid-tier storage (Clariion), enterprise-tier (Symmetrix), SAN switches (including Cisco, Brocade, and McData), and NAS connectivity (Celerra).
Computer Room Consultant
Supervised a group of student employees whose responisbility was to manage a computer lab and assisted users with Microsoft and multimedia applications such as Adobe Creative Suite on both the Windows and Macintosh platforms.
