Ever since the first time I read Good to Great, by Jim Collins, as I was beginning college and striving to discover what my future career would be, I knew that rather than searching for a list of careers that fell into a specific income range and making a decision on the best fit in that category, I had to discover within myself first what I was most PASSIONATE about in life, and second what I was BEST IN THE WORLD at. If those classifications came first, I knew that the income would be there.It turns out that this philosophy is somewhat backwards to the classical nature of career discovery for a college student, or really anybody. I have too many friends that spent way too much time and money chasing an education and a career that would pay a certain desirable annual salary, only to find years down the road that while the money is good, they go to work everyday wishing they were someplace else doing something different.After returning from two years of volunteer service, I learned two things about myself. First I knew that I loved people. I loved being around people, interacting with people, and watching and learning about how people function. Second, I learned that I loved teaching and developing people. There was no greater satisfaction for me than to see a person make a breakthrough in their life and move to the next level, simply by lifting their head above the clouds of mediocrity and acting on their newfound vision of what could be.I knew that if I was going to spend he majority of my life working, that I had better choose a career that enabled me to do what I loved to do and played to my strengths. As turns out people who love what they do, work harder, longer, and typically do it better than their counterparts. It is those types of people that companies search for and will do almost anything to retain. It is also these types of people that there is always a market for.Life is too short to spend it doing something you don't love!
