Diverse Small team International Design for an Underprivileged CommunityI was part of 10 volunteer students selected to design with KaTO architecture nonprofit. Our mission was to design from scratch a community center for the 150,000 person community of San Francisco, Juarez, Mexico. We faced considerable site, square footage, and price constraints for this low income community but prevailed in submitting a unique functional design to serve as a hall, multi use studio, kitchen class room, clinic, as well as an outdoor gathering space.Our design began from our imagination - sketches - functionality - models - design down selects to structural design - Revit modeling - HVAC - passive heating / cooling - environmental sustainability and reusability - site design.Our journeys took us from class room instruction - digital modeling - International site tour - meeting the citizens of the community - understanding the social economic reality of low income communities - consulting with our constructors - developing as a teamOur young team was guided by the architect of KaTO, Kyle Murphy, and the extensive professional network of volunteers he has created, along with the executives from Grupo Garza Ponce who created the community and worked with KaTO to build our design.
