About Eric Brueckner
As a Senior Patent Agent at Erise I am a primary member of the litigation team. My technical writing skills allow me to support client patent objectives and process complex information in creative and effective ways.I personally hold three U.S. patents describing methods for making and assembling microscale light-emitting diodes for deformable and transparent display applications. Holding these patents allows me to relate to clients on their mission to patent their innovations, and best support their objectives. Before joining Erise, I worked as a Patent Analyst for 10 years at another law firm where I earned my USPTO registration. I primarily focused on patent litigation matters. Prior to my work in law firms, I earned my undergraduate degree in chemistry and my doctoral degree in materials chemistry. My Ph.D. research focused on novel fabrication and assembly methods for microscale solid-state semiconductor devices, specifically light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and solar cells. My curiosity for learning doesn't stop when I go home; I love all things DIY for many of the same reasons I love patent litigation. There's always something new to learn, whether it's a new technology space from a recent patent matter, learning how to replace the cycling thermostat in my clothes dryer, or designing and building a backyard patio and cooking station. Tinkering, designing, and building all allow me to express my acumen for problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and attention to detail.

Patent Analyst
I am a registered patent agent before the USPTO primarily handling patent litigation matters, both defendant and plaintiff matters. Notable clients are in the areas of telecommunication, software and consumer electronics. In patent litigation matters I have helped to develop non-infringement and infringement theories, invalidity and counter-invalidity theories, including prior art searching under §§102 and 103. I have helped to develop claim construction positions by corresponding with expert witnesses, inventors and engineers. I have a proven capability in corresponding with both the client and fellow attorneys, through new business proposals and drafting and editing briefs and reports. While my primary focus is in patent litigation matters, I have experience in patent prosecution, including Office Action responses and Examiner interviews. This experience has given me greater insight into strategies used during patent prosecution that I have been able to apply to my litigation matters.
Ph.D Graduate Student
As a Ph.D. candidate at UIUC I conducted research in the area of semiconductor fabrication, focusing on novel fabrication methods to create new classes of highly functional, solid-state devices with non-traditional form factors that facilitate previously-impossible usage scenarios. • InGaN Light-Emitting Diodes (“microLEDs”) o Developed novel processes to fabricate dense arrays of fully functional microLEDs down to 25µm x 25µm on a semiconductor wafer. o Developed techniques to deterministically transfer the microLEDs from the dense, wafer-based array to organized and sparse arrays on secondary substrates (e.g., glass or plastic). o Developed techniques to electrically interconnect the sparse microLED arrays and integrate with phosphors for white-light panels. • Single Crystal Silicon Solar Cells o Developed novel processes to fabricate 11% efficient micro-solar cells from a single crystal silicon semiconductor wafer. o Developed techniques to transfer the micro-solar cells onto secondary substrates for use in unusual, high concentrating modules by integrating optical components to increase the light-capture cross-section of the micro-solar cells.
National Science Foundation Research Experience For Undergraduates
• Examined the capabilities of the University of Missouri Research Reactor to irradiate low enriched uranium (LEU) targets for the production of Tc-99m. o C++ code to evaluate radiation shielding requirements based on measured radiation doses of active radioisotopes
General Roofing
Worked alongside team members to remove old and damaged roofing materials then install new roofing materials to residential and commercial buildings.
