The Polaris Integrated Library System (ILS) is an enterprise library workflow management system that is currently in use at over 1,200 libraries in North America.As Principal Software Engineer, I managed a team of full stack developers. In this role, I coordinated the efforts of my development team with the quality assurance, product management, and executive teams to deliver quality software to our customers. I represented Polaris Library systems on NISO standards committees. I worked with industry partners to integrate their technology with the Polaris ILS. The Cambridge Public Library was the first library in the United States to offer graphical Internet access to the public. Under the direction of a brilliant organization, I was one of many people who helped make this possible. My day to day responsibilities included the integration, implementation, and maintenance of library software and systems to provide user services and enhance staff productivity. NELINET was a library cooperative providing OCLC services to New England libraries. In addition to OCLC software and services NELINET provided cooperative purchasing agreements with the (then) entire landscape of electronic research databases. I was responsible for all software and computer systems in the NELINET offices. I installed NELINET's first-ever internet connection and local area network. I configured and managed a wide range of new and innovative (at the time) internet services/servers including WWW, Telnet, FTP, Gopher, SMTP. Provided provide user services and training for new technologies and software packages. Managed the selection, maintenance and ongoing development of technology systems. Responsible for management of NELINET’s wide area network and internet services. Happily, the technology I managed is but a memory. The technical skills I learned have been long ago supplanted with skills relevant for technology at hand.
