I began my post-secondary education in biological sciences and eventually specialized into molecular genetics. This is an area I am very interested in and I believe will become integral to personalized health in the future. After completing my Bachelors of Science in Molecular Genetics with first class honours, I worked for a year at ALS Environmental. During this time I was a lab analyst responsible for testing both water and soil samples for a variety of chemical and biological parameters. Although I enjoy laboratory work I wanted to diversify my education and learn more about the business behind biotechnology. This lead me to enrol in the Masters of Biomedical Technology (MBT) program at the University of Calgary. The MBT program focuses on the synergy between science and business, including intellectual property, project management, finance, clinical trials, sales and marketing. As the final component of my Masters degree I travelled to Ireland for a practicum in which I conducted research at the University College Cork. During this time I discovered, isolated and characterized a novel virus that shows potential as a therapeutic agent. After completion of the Masters program I began work as a Sales and Marketing Associate at Surface Medical Inc. This biotech startup company has developed the first clinically approved patch "CleanPatch" for the repair of medical mattresses and stretchers. By repairing damage to medical surfaces, it prevents patient fluids from absorbing into the mattress and potentially passing on infection to future patients. This product is approved by Health Canada, the FDA and has been used in hundreds of hospitals worldwide.
