As Chief Architect, I am responsible for overseeing the technical architecture for all Everbridge products, as well as the vision and global scalability of innovative, SaaS-based applications for critical communications and collaboration.

Building a team of outstanding developers to build a platform for aggregating and analyzing genomic data on a global scale in support of researchers and clinicians.Genome Bridge was a new nonprofit startup incubating within Broad Institute, with a mission to build acloud platform for aggregating, analyzing and sharing the world’s genomic data in a secure, scalable and cost-effective fashion. I joined as CTO/VP Engineering, with a role that included building the team, leading the architecture and development of the platform, establishing the engineering processes and culture, and working with the other senior managers to set strategy and direction. Other responsibilities included working with the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (I sit on the Security and Data Working Groups), helping to raise money through grants and donations, and meeting with potential partners.I grew the Genome Bridge team from 2 to 6 engineers and worked with another Broad team to deliver a prototype environment for processing cancer genomic data on Google cloud that could handle 3x theamount of data of previous efforts. Working system was developed before regulatory concerns forcedchange in focus to private cloud.Genome Bridge has merged back into the Broad Institute, and my group is focused on building the Genome Vault - a system for managing genomic data.

Succeeded technical co-founder as CXTO. Established the Office of the CTO, including defining charter and responsibilities for Architecture Team and CTO Services Group focused on methodology. Lead architecture and design of next generation services architecture for Carbonite's storage and applications. Carbonite 2.0 is a new Cloud Data Services platform designed to scale to hundres of petabytes of storage and provide a robust, scalable high-performance storage back-end for Carbonite's applications. This platform uses modern technologies including NoSQL databases and erasure coding storage systems.Initiated and championed ongoing relationship with public cloud vendors as part of a hybrid cloud architecture combining Carbonite data centers with public cloud infrastructure for delivery of services.Developed programs for innovation and IP development which resulted in four patents for Carbonite and over a dozen pending applications.

Led the Server Team, responsible for the Carbonite Online Backup Service, through mulitple releases improving performance, scalability and functionality. Built and deployed a sophisticated cloud storage system that comprises over a thousand services and 100 petabytes of storage spread across multiple data centers. Led team to implement major improvements in managing service at scale, including a new bespoke software deployment tool an a Nagios-based monitoring system.Grew the team from 6 to 23 through hiring of outstanding individuals, and expanded the role of the team to include mobile applications, sustaining engineering and customer escalations. Implemented Agile/Scrum development process across the Server team.

Architected and implemented new Billing and Payment systems for Carbonite. These systems replaced Carbonite's exisitng payment systems and scaled to handle millions of transactions per year and over $100M in annual billing. Introduced the first Service Oriented Architecture into the Carbonite Web back end.Designed and implemented a system for credit card tokenization and filed for a patent (pending). This solution combined hardware and software for securely storing sensitive information. Led implementation of Carbonite's PCI compliance efforts and served as Chief Security Officer.

Joined Eons as consultant to provide senior technical skills. Consulted on architecture and development of components of the Eons.com application suite, including Lifemap, Lifedreams and Lifepath applications. Developed applications in Ruby on Rails, Java and WebObjects. Led small development team to design and implement new application, Lifepath. Lifepath was an innovative approach to allowing users to document their lives and aspirations through a timeline of events and goals. The Lifepath application was launched successfully in August 2007, after a roughly 6 person, 3 month development effort.Promoted to leadership role as CTO/VP Engineering during transitional period. Responsible for development, AQ and systems engineering/operations teams. Provided leadership to stabilize the engineering group through management transition and with subsequent attrition limited to one engineer. Led efforts to refocus engineering group with an emphasis on quality and productivity.Led the re-architecture of the product to address significant reliability, scalability and performance issues. Took the product from hundreds of crashes per day to averaging less than one per day. Initiated efforts to refactor the UI implementation to enhance software reuse and simplify application development.Oversaw the operation infrastructure for Eons.com, including hardware, software, people and processes. Developed and implemented plans to enhance reliability and support growth through 2008. Major initiatives included new application servers, new firewalls, database redundancy through DRBD, database scaling through replication, and implementation of third party monitoring with Gomez. Managed an outside evaluation of Eons operational infrastructure.Worked with COO and Product Management to develop Eons’ product strategy and plans. Led rollout of Eons V2.0, which relaunched Eons.com with a new look and feel that focused on the social network aspects of the application.

Joined founding team as CTO for Content Objects, a conceptual stage startup focused on monitoring and controlling distributed enterprise content for compliance and risk management. My primary focus was product strategy and definition.Reviewed Content Objects’ existing technology and product plans. Developed recommendations to move from a consumer focused content management product towards an enterprise-focused content control and monitoring product. Developed Compliance Intelligence strategy around concept of analyzing information about enterprise network content and end-user activity to provide an analytics application for compliance. Gathered market requirements by interviewing potential customers and partners (system integrators and reseller channels). Met with industry analysts (PSG, ESG, IDC, Directions on Microsoft) to gather data and get feedback. Researched industry and competitors.Led product definition and specification efforts. Wrote and revised Product Requirements Document. Reviewed architecture and design documents from development team. Assisted CEO in developing business strategy and associated documents and presentations. Presented strategy to potential investors, partners and customers.

Seven month engagement consulting on software development. Led design and implementation of software components of government agency contract to develop query translation technology. Developed architecture and design for implementation, and authored “Detailed Design and Plan” specification document to meet deliverable to end customer. Project consisted of desktop application for developing translation databases and run-time query translation engine integrated with commercial search engines. Architecture incorporated open source stack (Linux, Apache/Tomcat and MySQL), Eclipse platform for desktop application, and web services for query engine (both SOAP and REST interfaces).Managed implementation team for duration of project through testing, delivery and acceptance by end customer. Presented at regular meetings with government agency contract managers. Personally implemented key components of solution in Java based on Eclipse application architecture.

Co-Founder of a startup developing personal search technology. My primary focus was on the product side, but I was fully involved in all aspects of our strategy, marketing and business development. Argo was funded through a combination of private investment and revenue from customers.Recruited and led product development team that developed and released the Argo Desktop, the first integrated browser toolbar to support desktop searching. The Argo Desktop was developed in under six months to first commercial release as the Lycos HotBot Desktop, and supported searching of local files and email, as well as integrated web search, browser history search and support for RSS. It was released in early 2004, nine months ahead of comparable efforts from Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. Argo Desktop is a C++ Windows/COM implementation comprising a background indexing engine and an IE browser helper object implementing a browser-based UI using XML, XSL and CSS.Led development of the Argo Notebook System, an innovative product to allow users to find, save and organize information from both public and private sources. The Argo Notebook system enabled a new, content based advertising medium built on a personal information management paradigm. The Notebook System was licensed to Lycos and the first GA release was delivered in Q3 2004. Defined the architecture for the Notebook System based on .NET web services, ASP.NET and MS SQL Server. Solely implemented initial version of Notebook server in C# as .NET web services. Wrote and submitted patent application for technology in Argo Notebook System.

Joined BroadVision as Sr. Architect and worked as part of founding engineering team to define, design and implement the V1.0 release of BroadVision One-To-One. This product was a complex N-tier distributed system initially based on C++, CORBA, Unix and Oracle.Defined BroadVision’s security strategy and infrastructure. Implemented V1.0 features for user profiling services and security services.Became Director of Software Development (5/1995) and managed original development team that produced V1.0 and V1.1 of BroadVision One-To-One, a system for highly personalized, dynamic web applications. Recruited engineers and grew team from 10 to over 30. Managed ports of product from Solaris to HPUX and Windows NT. Remained very hands-on in development, testing and release.Promoted to Sr. Director of Engineering (1996). Split development team and launched applications development group. Managed 4 separate development teams implementing BroadVision’s applications for E-commerce, E-banking, Content Management and Knowledge Management (Portal). Engaged in hands-on role in development of E-commerce application.

Responsible for coordinating User Interfaces across all products of OpenVision. Analyzed vendors and selected UI development tools used to implement OpenVision’s suite. Wrote the OpenVision Style Guide.Served as member of OpenVision’s corporate Architecture Board. Worked to define overall architecture for OpenVision’s integrated suite of system management applications.
