About Eric Hill
Eric Hill is a product of the community college system. As a junior in high school, he was part of the first high school class allowed to attend college classes for dual credits in what is known at the “Running Start” program. He earned an Associate of Arts and Science at Big Bend Community College, and continued his education there in the Civil Engineering Technologist program; a multiple year technical degree focusing on engineering, hand drafting, computer-aided drafting with AutoCAD, and surveying. He then served as a missionary for 2 years where he became fluent in Spanish, while he served, and loved the people of Texas. After returning from his mission, he met the love of his life at a Halloween dance. They have been married for 26 years and are the parents of 9 children. After his wedding, Eric gained employment at Cascade Fire Protection in Pasco, Washington where he designed fire sprinkler systems and paid his way through college at Columbia Basin College. At CBC, Eric earned an associate’s degree in Applied Science with an emphasis in Analytical Chemistry. At CBC he took an elective course in independent research, where he impressed his professors and a PNNL Chemist who acted as a mentor for the class. He was offered an internship to work in the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory as part of the first group of workers allowed to use the building after construction. One internship turned into 4, and eventually he was hired by PNNL after he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology with a Minor in Chemistry at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. He earned a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Washington State University while attending night school. He is the designer, operator, and manager of the Microbial Cell Dynamics Laboratory at PNNL, which was created to help the DOE learn how to clean up ecosystems contaminated by radioactive waste. He was part of the team which used the bioreactors to methodically unwind the complex mechanisms of dissimilatory metal reduction, a process where bacteria ‘breathe” metal. Their discovery of microbial nanowires was made possible with controlled cultivation. He has used controlled cultivation his entire career of 25+ years, and holds multiple patents for innovations in bioreactor design and application.

Microbiologist/Chemical Engineer
CurrentI run an intensive care unit for microbes called the Microbial Cell Dynamics Laboratory (MCDL) where we use controlled cultivation to study the limits of biology, and how life works. I invent and run life-support machines for microbes to support their growth in extreme conditions. I've invented 7 generations of photobioreactors, including the bioreactor that holds the record for the fastest growing phototroph (doubling time of 1.9 hours). I've developed methods to adapt phototrophs for ultra-fast growth, and maximum productivity. We have developed technologies for the production of biofuels, and use the MCDL to do fundamental research on microbial physiology. We used the MCDL to discover the conditions where microbial nanowires are formed. This work has been the basis of the emerging field of Electro-microbiology. I'm an expert in designing and operating bioreactors for the growth of microbes. I've established safety protocols, mentored other staff, ensured environmental compliance, served on safety committees, obtained permits for work, handled disposal of waste, and managed projects.
Medical Laboratory Technician
I served as a medical laboratory technician in the microbiology department of Tri-Cities Laboratory. Tri-Cities laboratory is a company that is owned by three community based hospitals and a large reference lab. TCL performs microbiology, virology, and immunology testing for the three hospitals, as well as a large outpatient clientele. I worked at TCL half-time, while working as a limited term employee at PNNL as a microbiologist. I was required to end my job with TCL when I accepted a permanent position at PNNL as a scientist.
Computer Aided Design Technician
I was an AutoCAD operator in the design department where we drew and modified plans for fire-sprinkler systems. I did surveying of installed systems to assemble as-built-drawings, supplied product documentation on all installed systems, assembled sets of construction drawings, and gathered pressure-testing data for water-supplies to buildings.
Laborer
I was a general laborer for a small construction company, specializing in concrete, stamped concrete, foundations, retaining walls, framing, and dairy-farm construction.
