I work for the VP for Research at the University of Utah's Rio Mesa Center located at the Entrada Ranch located on the Dolores Rivers approximately 40 miles east of Moab, UT. The Rio Mesa center is a field-based station for interdisciplinary research that emphasizes ecology and the environment in the broadest sense. I maintained 380 acres to protect the real-world laboratory for researching the complexities of the biological fragile systems along the Dolores River, But not limited to researching and analyzing: floodplain delineation, flood peak attenuation, Cottonwood trees, Cryptobiotic soil crusts, atmospheric and ornithological measurements. Additionally, maintained good public relations (PR) by acting as a liaison with the local ranchers, schools, scientists, volunteers and non-governmental organizations (NGO) for educational and research purposes. I would give talks and presentations on the local geology, river science and on topics of agrostology (grass), cyanobacterium and human sustainability. Assisted and advised students with applications for college, internships and working on projects that protected the real-world laboratory for researching the ecological fragile systems on the Dolores River. The NASA Curriculum Improvements Partnership Award for the Integration of Research (CIPAIR) project initiated a strong partnership and collaboration between College of the Desert (COD) and California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB). The program goals was to gave the opportunity for undergraduates to work with NASA where I facilitated them in their education experience through this program. As a CIPAIR Assistant Coordinator I outreach to the community to attract underrepresented minority students to become a STEM major and work along with and reported to Carl Farmer P.h.D.. I was responsible for the Atmospheric Science Experiments and Research that the interns did in the Coachella Valley. I utilized Microsoft Excel and Hysplit Trajectory Model(s) to compute data into graphs and models. I mentored, taught and oversaw the Atmospheric Science Experiments and Research in air quality and the effect secondary aerosols had on human health, the ozone and other pollutants in the Coachella Valley. As a part of the program the COD students traveled to NASA Dryden Edwards Air Force Base, UCR and CSUSB to enrich their experience to develop their analytical and research skills. These interns were part of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program. All in effort so that the interns will attract more under-represented minority students to the STEM fields and increase the rate of transfers to 4-year colleges. As well as, for the interns to expand their research opportunities at NASA while providing them a better understanding of NASA. 90% of my students got a summer internship, grants and transfer to a UC school that following fall (2013)
