About Eric Magnuson
I have been thinking about and generating art work for well over twenty-five years, and consider myself to be a conceptual or an idea-based artist (non-medium specific), working principally within the framework of semiotics. From this context, traditional artistic disciplines are employed as each particular proposition directs me.The work generally takes shape within a project basis, and the subject, genre, and duration are methodically determined by designed theoretical parameters and/or played out with intuitive whim. Looking back, one project dovetails or intersects with the next creating an ideational daisy chain. "Magnuson has described his work as semiotic investigations which examine the conceptual and representational shifts between the identity of words and the reality of things."Within my practice and study and with some regularity, I have discovered and observed a curious pattern of seemingly arbitrary relations in how meaning is culturally assigned. I have come to the conclusion that no reference is clean direct, no meaning is absolute, and no reporting entirely objective. It may not be sufficient to simply understand the meaning of things; we may have to discern what things do not mean as well.

Information. In this new age. What is it, and what is it not? What it looks like and how it is shaped is very much a changing and fluid phenomenon in today’s questioned, debated and falsified reality. Facts have become bias and truth subjective. The actual is now partisan and viewed ‘as real’ through the lens of belief over knowledge. Was it any other way? How does one practice art making, and particularly make artwork that stems from semiotic study and concerns? With everything upside down, challenged with intolerance and dogmatism, and much of it redacted and manipulated, how do we see and speak with accuracy, clarity and purpose? How does one practice honesty in a corrupted world? In a place where there is no questioning, yet everything is questioned? Can one whisper in the storm? Tell the forest for the trees?Gaslighting does not appear in a vacuum. When studies show that our earliest memories are more than likely false, and the eyewitness proven unreliable, objective reality becomes subjective. The actual becomes whatever you want it to be. Pathological liars become president. My philosophy and approach is not so absolute about meaning, certainty and information. It's not so black and white. There are many of us who still believe accurate facts and trust good and honorable people and organizations to speak truth to power. Study, deduction, verification and corroboration become indispensable tools to determine authenticity, legitimacy and understanding. Removing everything that is unnecessary. So many layers of zero. This is my journey down the road of signs.
