Operational and System Engineering responsibilities for the Microsoft Mediaroom based TV headend at Hawaiian Telcom.

Enabled deployment of the Digital Cable Tuner (OCUR) for the PC which allows Windows Media Center to legally receive, display and record both encrypted and copy protected high definition digital TV program directly from the cable provider. Deployment support required establishing relationships with cable TV providers, PC OEMs, commercial AV installer, Microsoft engineering, etc. and coordinating a joint effort to make a large collection of complex technologies work properly in the unpredictible environment of the customers' homes.

Responsible for the deployment, maintenance, and support of the Microsoft TV Foundation Edition Hybrid product deployed in 10 US markets by a major telecommunications company. The Foundation Edition Hybrid product includes both client and server technologies which provide interactive TV features including PPV, VOD, EPG and multi-room DVR.

Enhancement, maintenance and customer support of the Microsoft TV Advanced software platform for cable television set top boxes. Responsibilities included new feature implementation, user interface customizations and enhancements, troubleshooting customer issues and bug fixing. Three customized clients built for two different Latin American customers. Custom features included: multi-lingual (English/Spanish) user interface, custom applications for TV listings, Pay per View and digital music. Supported technologies include: MPEG2, DCII, DOCSIS, Windows CE, HTML, JavaScript, C++, Windows Server 2000, and Microsoft SQL Server.

Sent to Tokyo to build a Microsoft TV presence in Japan. Responsibilities included: Recruitment of technical staff, Development of strong relationships with major Consumer Electronics Manufacturers, Program Management of Japanese MSTVA product development, and support of Business Development and Sales efforts in Japan. Other Japan based activities included: Representation of Microsoft at meetings of the Japanese Broadcast Standards organization (ARIB).

Responsible for managing all technical issues between the Microsoft and OEM development teams contributing hardware and low level software to the Microsoft TV Advanced 1.0 product. OEM technologies managed included: MPEG2 streaming technologies, DCII conditional access related technologies, Windows CE drivers including Video, Ethernet, and DOCSIS. Program Management activities included: Definition of OEM’s deliverables (hardware, software and documentation), verification of quality of OEM deliverables, conducting bi-weekly telephone conferences, hosting face-to-face bug resolution meetings, managing the constant flow of technical Q and A, and serving as proxy for OEMs in internal meetings.

Responsible for technical account management of Japan based licensees of Microsoft/WebTV technology. Major activities included: • Technology transfer to OEMs during development, manufacturing and deployment of co-branded WebTV products. • Field Application Engineering support to a major CE company during the development of a digital cable set top box based on a digital cable reference design designed by WebTV. • Recruitment of Japanese printer manufacturers to develop drivers for the WebTV product. Negotiated the printing developers’ agreement, defined the print driver development environment, documented the printing system and APIs, and worked directly with the printer manufacturers to develop and test their WebTV drivers.

Led the development of numerous highly successful Apple branded printer products including the Color StyleWriter 6500, Color StyleWriter 2400 and Personal LaserWriter. These programs involved extensive customization of printers developed by American and Japanese OEMs. Responsibilities included: Scheduling, budgeting and financial analysis of new product developments, technical relationship management between Apple and OEM engineering teams, direct management of core engineering team (Apple) and coordination of Apple internal resources in the areas of agency approvals, industrial design, packaging and logistics.

Resident in Japan for four years providing engineering services to Apple Computer's component procurement and peripheral development activities. Responsibilities included the holding of regular status meetings with key suppliers, providing logistical support to visiting engineers/operations staff, and acting as troubleshooter to insure a continuous supply of components to supply production. Also provided custom product development services to Apple Japan including the development of a NuBus based Japanese font card shipped with every Macintosh II sold in Japan.

Worked closely with Japanese OEMs to develop custom firmware and I/O for many Apple branded accessory products including the ImageWriter, ImageWriter II and ImageWriter LQ.
