This is a contract job that involves porting numerous Quark XTensions from Quark 6.5 to Quark 8. Created an XTension to output SEC (Security and Exchange Commission) compliant HTML and ASCII from a QuarkXPress document. The HTML reflects almost all of the complex formatting possible in a QuarkXPress document including tabs, scaling, rotating, leading, hyphenation, etc.

    Senior Software Engineer
    Vertis Mar 2000 - Mar 2009
Ad Production provides merchants, designers, photography studios, and advertising directors with event, proofing and page-planning interfaces that allow for rapid advertising layout. I had a role in its overall design and created the PageProduction and PriceVersioning Quark XTensions. The XTensions were ported to Abode Indesign by another engineer with my help. We then worked together to further the design. PageProduction facilitates advertising layout using XML from Ad Production. PriceVersioning can then create plate documents with substituted prices. One application I created allowed similar functionality with MultiAdCreator, another managed images in need of color correction. A Quark DDS XTension was created as an experiment. Added the intelligent extraction of data from existing QuarkXPress files for import into Ad Production. Ad Production was created using HTML and JavaScript. The XTensions and applications are in C++ and Carbon. Xerces was used for reading and writing XML.
  • Quark
    Software Engineer
    Quark Oct 1998 - Feb 2000
Responsibility for the user interface (UI) of a large-scale multi-lingual e-commerce system. The product includes modules for tracking customers and products, inventory and warehouse management, order processing, financial management in multiple currencies including AR and GL interface, pricing, and reporting. I worked with development teams totaling approximately 150 people in Denver, Germany, India and Singapore. Consulted on the UI of other projects, and gave presentations of UI concepts and issues to a number of groups at Quark. Created a UI style and standards guide to be used for client server projects at Quark. Conducted site visits to gather requirements and understand the user of the software. The product was created using J++, XML, SQL Server 7, HTML, Active Server Pages (ASP), Crystal reports, and Exchange Server.
  • Mediaway
    Senior Software Engineer
    Mediaway Feb 1997 - Jul 1998
MediaAssets is an asset management system comprised of a proprietary object oriented multimedia database running on an NT server, and clients running on Macintosh, Windows, and the Web. I designed and implemented how the product finds assets, and supports cross-platform video and Quark documents. My responsibilities included a Quark XTension, numerous database utility programs and a software development kit (SDK) used for custom projects. Development work was done in C++ using CodeWarrior and Microsoft Developer Studio. The Think Class Library (TCL) was used for the Macintosh client.
  • Network Multimedia
    Software Engineer
    Network Multimedia Feb 1996 - Feb 1997
A small group of use acquired the rights to AppWare from Novell and formed this company. We added the ability to create Netscape plug-ins and CGIs (Common Gateway Interface). We also added components for FileMaker Pro. I continued to design and implement most of the ALMs as I had at Novell even after our funding ran out. I learned a lot about what can make a small start-up succeed or fail. It was very educational to be involved in finding investors, marketing, sales, and other aspects of the business.
  • Novell
    Software Engineer
    Novell Oct 1993 - Jan 1996
AppWare was a cross-platforn visual programming language comprised of objects the could be linked to create an application. I was responsible for 16 out of 65 objects or ALMs (AppWare Loadable Module) including Calculation, Date, File Operations, General, Launcher, Menu, Menu Item, Menubar, Number, Scanner, Signal, Text, Text Builder, Time, XCDM, and Window. I served on the Human Interface Group where we created an internationally aware cross-platform GUI. Created a Window ALM in C++ that supported OpenDoc, which was part of a high visibility project demonstrated in the main session of the Apple World Wide Developers Conference. Created the installation program for the entire product and made sure all the pieces (documentation, samples, tutorials, and software) came together in a timely manner. Maintained the SDK for creating ALMs. Demonstrated the product at trade shows, gathered customer input, and worked closely with my peers to determine the direction of the product.
  • Proficiency/Macenglish/Dyned
    Software Engineer
    Proficiency/Macenglish/Dyned Sep 1989 - Sep 1993
I was the project leader and co-designer of an adult literacy and ESL (English as a Second Language) software package. My team included a linguist, an artist, and several software engineers. Development work included sound input device drivers, waveform display, handwritten character recognition, and interactive video. I also did market research and co-presented at educational conferences. When Proficiency laid off everyone but me, and became MacEnglish, I became responsible for the entire product line. I re-engineered the products to improve the interface, feature set, and maintainability of the code. When DynEd purchased MacEnglish, I continued my MacEnglish responsibilities while assisting in the port of the DOS based DynEd ESL products to the Macintosh. I programmed in 68000 Assembly language, C and Pascal using MPW (Macintosh Programmers Workshop) and Hypertalk during this time.
