Crawford AH Phone: (414) 529-3577In the three summers that I was employed at Crawford as an Intern, (along with working during semester breaks), it was my ultimate goal to gain as much in-clinic experience as possible. I am confident in the teaching I received because I am now familiar with the inner workings of a busy companion animal practice and feel comfortable with the demands of working in that type of environment. Skills I learned during my employment at Crawford are as follows: communication skills, checking in clients for exams, (acquiring full history from the presenting client and taking vitals of the patient upon arrival), animal restraint (especially with aggressive/agitated patients), aseptic techniques, vaccination schedules, sterilizing/autoclaving surgical equpment, prepping patients for surgery (calculating and drawing up pre-meds, and prepping the surgery site), venipuncture, ear cytology, urinalysis, expressing anal glands, etc.I was also fortunate to observe as well as assist on many surgical procedures. I observed the following procedures:numerous castrations,multiple lance/ flush of abcesses, 5 laceration repairs , 4 growth removals, 1 entropion repair, 3 Tibial tuberocity advancement surgeries,1 foreign body adbdominal exploratory, 1 laproscopic cystotomy, I personally assisted the Veterinarians in the following surgical procedures:2 TTA's, 1 Foreign body abdominal exploratory, and 2 laproscopic cystotomiesMy favorite part about being fortunate enough to intern at Crawford Animal Hospital was the patience with which the staff taught me and their eagerness to answer my questions and help me learn.

I greatly value the time I spent working at AERC because it broadened my skills to include not only companion animal species in a day clinic setting, but also skills pertaining to reptiles, pocket pets, wildlife, and avian species in an emergency setting. I feel I gained the ability to respond and act appropriately in the urgent, and sometimes stressful environment that goes along with an emergency clinic setting. Furthermore, I gained soft skills that helped me to work and communicate better with clients who may be distressed due to the situation with their pet. My duties at this position were as follows:-Triage of incoming patients both over the phone and as they entered the lobby, -Collecting and entering intake forms, patient histories, and intake vitals in the computer system-Communication between the client and the veterinarian to ensure the client understands the pets situation and the possible treatment options.-Animal restraint for procedures.-Explaining to clients the tests, treatments and the expenses associated with them from a Medical Plan created by the Veterinarian.-Appropriating medications and explaining the administration of meds and post visit care to the client.
