Ferric Contrast, Inc. was started from the research I did as a graduate student (see below for details). The goal of the company is to bring an Iron MRI contrast agent to market, replacing current Gadolinium agents used today. My responsibilities at the company include design, synthesis, and characterization of Iron coordination compounds; technical writing including patents, grants and publications; and day-to-day lab maintenance including inventory management, instrument upkeep and ensuring good manufacturing practice (GMP).As a PhD candidate at the University at Buffalo, I worked to design and synthesize novel ligands which stabilize particular spin and oxidation states of transition metal ions such as Iron, Cobalt, and Nickel. These complexes were studied for their capability towards magnetic resonance imaging applications through relaxivity and chemical exchange saturation transfer mechanisms through our collaborators at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in downtown Buffalo. The project has enhanced my proficiency in organic and inorganic synthesis, as well as characterizing such compounds through NMR and spectroscopy methods. Due to the in vivo application of these complexes, I have focused on methods to understand the behavior of these complexes in aqueous/biological medium, utilizing techniques such as pH potentiometrics, cyclic voltammetry, and NMR in the presence of biologically relevant molecules including carbonate, phosphate, sodium chloride, and albumin protein. My tenure at the University of Buffalo as PhD candidate has taught me the importance of listening and learning from others, recognizing that scientific research and development is inherently a collaborative process; that the sum of the parts is greater than the whole, and the greatest scientific achievements are the product of contributions made by many like-minded individuals.
