I was a Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Intern whose primary project was the completion of a component of the Visual Resource Inventory (VRI) for Shenandoah National Park. The VRI, which was in its fourth year when I arrived in May, is a project that documents the scenic features and quality and historical/cultural importance of the Park's best views, with the goal of working with surrounding communities so development occurs in ways that least impact the Park's scenic resources. My job was to coordinate with staff and volunteers to perform this documentation, rate each view using a set of criteria developed by the national office, and input that data into a database. When I arrived, the component of the VRI that I was primarily responsible for was 50% complete. By the time I finished my internship, I had completed the remainder of that component of the inventory and 50% of the other main component. Additionally, I was involved with stream and air quality monitoring, soil core sampling, and macroinvertebrate sampling.

As part of missionary service, I gained valuable experience learning how to communicate and teach effectively, listen to concerns, develop a sense off discipline, and offer service at every opportunity. In addition, I served as Assistant to the President, overseeing training for approx. 150 other missionaries and working closely with the Mission President to organize and carry out events.
