Research Mechanical & Civil Engineer
Research Civil Engineer (Highway)
Infrastructure Analysis and Construction Team.- Developed and manage Pavement Research Database System (PRDS) for internal and external research support for the FHWA Office of Infrastructure R&DServed as Agreement or Contract Officer’s Technical Representative on research and development projects totaling ~$55M. These included work with energy harvesting, vehicle technologies, asphalt, asphalt concrete, geosynthetics, hydraulic cement concrete, pavement structural design, construction and analytical structural modeling techniques.- Served as technical liaison for FHWA representation on technical panels for the Transportation Research Board (TRB), National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) and Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP)- Served as technical reviewer for the Department of Energy Office of Vehicle Technologies Annual Merit Review
Research Highway Engineer
- Manage database operations for the Long-Term Pavement Performance Program (LTPP)- Manage deflection data collection activities on in-service pavement test sections as well as calibration centers for Falling Weight Deflectometers (FWDs).- Manage research contracts primarily aimed at modeling pavement response to loading, material characterization and validating models with instrumentation data.TPF-5(039) - Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) Calibration Center and Operational ImprovementsObjective: Improve the calibration process and associated softwareThis involved preparing a statement of work, collaborating and soliciting state participation and executing contracts and managing funding, as well as ensuring state participant satisfaction.FHWA Design Guide Implementation Team (DGIT) - 2004-2007Served on a 5-member team to support the implementation of the NCHRP Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) and associated software. The team provided training on MEPDG content training and software functionality to FHWA Division Offices and State Highway Agencies (SHAs). The DGIT also prepared and conducted a National Survey to SHAs to determine their present pavement design practices and tools, knowledge of the MEPDG, interest in MEPDG implementation and anticipated training or implementation support needs. This survey was vetted through the US DOT and advertised on the Federal Register for public comment prior to release to the intended audience. The MEPDG and associated software was subsequently adopted by the American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) as “AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design.”https://www.aashtoware.org/products/pavement/pavement-overview/
Mechanical Engineer
Conduct research for the National Pooled Fund Study SPR-2(212) "Non-Nuclear Testing of Soils and Granular Bases Using the GeoGage." Specific duties include evaluating operating principles of the gage to verify claims of the manufacturer; Supervise two other researchers to gather and evaluate reports and data from universities and state highway agencies that are using the gage; Report results of this evaluation to federal supervisors and recommend avenues to proceed with the study.Conduct research in the National Pooled Fund Study SPR-2(203) "Truck/Pavement/Economic Modeling and In-Situ Field Test Data Analysis Applications." Specific duties in this study include coordinating with universities and state highway agencies to gather data from full-scale flexible and rigid pavement test sections; Use this data as input to pavement response and performance computer models; Evaluate model output and make suggestions for model improvement and/or selection for distribution as a product to participants in the pooled fund study.Conduct research for the National Pooled Fund Study SPR-2(205), "Model Calibrations with Local Accelerated Pavement Test Data and Implementation with Focused Solutions to NAFTA Problems." Specific duties include economic modeling of highway traffic load scenarios to estimate the impact of increased loading from NAFTA traffic.Perform Quality Assurance Review of the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Program Dynamic Load Response Data from full-scale in-service rigid and flexible instrumented pavement test sections in NC and OH. Signals from the instrumentation, such as electric-resistance strain gages and linear variable displacement transducers (LVDTs) were evaluated to determine whether they exhibited excess noise, anticipated form and reasonable magnitude, based on signal processing techniques and comparison with linear-elastic pavement structural models.
Mechanical Engineer
Provide engineering research support to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) in McLean, VA- Designed and conducted controlled loading experiments using an instrumented test truck on full-scale instrumented highway sections- Performed mechanical and statistical analysis of pavement response, dynamic vehicle response and road profile data collected from controlled loading experiments- Acquired data from strain gages and accelerometers on an instrumented test truck to feed a mathematical model to produce dynamic wheel forces applied to the instrumented pavement.- Documented objectives, experimental procedures, results and conclusions of experiments for publication of technical reports- Executed vehicle dynamics, pavement response and life cycle cost computer models to validate model output with experimental results and make modifications where necessary- Edited outside contract reports for integrity of technical content, grammar and formatActed as a technical contact for outside contracts in order to monitor contract progress and status and advise on project direction - Prepare and defend research-funding proposals- Provided technical assistance to other research groups within the facility
