Worked on both mechanical and electronic duplex A4 Automatic Document Feeders, which were leveraged across multiple devices in the HP MFP product lineup and used within different divisions of HP on the HP Scan Asset Team. Solved Regulatory and ESD issues, Imaging Defects within the Paper Path, and Mechanical failures within the design and production for both A4 and A3 ADF’s. Completed work on automatic scanner testing, allowing life test and R&D engineers to adequately capture imaging defects with common media and then make changes to improve the design of the paper path.

Worked on the design and development of HP’s next generation of scanners using a new scanning technology in the HP MFP product lineup for the LaserJet Enterprise M575 series as well as the M525 series of devices. Designed and patented a drive system which would be used and leveraged across multiple A4 and A3 scanner programs within HP with a quad worm DC motor design that reduced part count, allowed for higher scan speed and improved acoustics as well as a compliant scanner tub design with lower overall system costs which also enabled sustained image quality over millions of scans for the workflow devices, meeting the market needs. Worked with contract manufacturers and suppliers throughout Asia on tooling, molding and assembly processes. Drove program and tooling schedules as well as budgets throughout all phases of the build and development with the suppliers from concept to production. Provided consultation to new engine and program managers at HP to train, guide and drive decisions in the new VEP scanner development model using HP asset teams and overseas vendors. Design cycle and development time line knowledge was shared for program alignment with printer engine and firmware development phases at HP, for the MFP programs to meet their schedule as well as reduced development time for future programs.

Worked on the LaserJet 4345 MFP and led the leverage of this common scanner and ADF into the Color LaserJet CM4730MFP and Digital Sender 9100C products. Developed an ADF automatic mechanical calibration procedure, which reduced manufacturing time and cost while helping end users. This resulted in a 20% sales increase for the Digital Sender 9100C and had saved HP $68.5M as of May 2009. Worked on multiple new A3 scanner systems and designed a high speed optical carriage along with instructing the vendor about Xenon illumination technology. Developed a mathematical visual dust algorithm so that scanner OEM’s could automate test procedures and not rely on visual results for failures from line operators. Taught the use of a Laser Doppler system and measurement / design techniques for reducing ADF pixel registrations issues. Co-developed with two different scanner vendors a similar carriage design to better understand their ability as OEM vendors. Made sure development on a new A4 carriage could support CCFL or LED illumination technologies and drove the OEM by using a new terminology called a carriage bounce constant, which measures the efficiency of an optical design. Eliminated the carriage lock in future scanner tub designs for field reliability improvement and warranty dollar savings. Reviewed all CAD drawing and specifications on current image scanners and led system architectural development on future scanners from sensors, carriages and illumination systems. Mentored engineers on scanners and imaging and supported the Image Quality team on optical-mechanical issues as well as preserving barcodes in a digital workflow environment.

Worked on multiple high-end to mid-range LaserJet and Copier based MFP type devices. For the LaserJet 9100MFP worked with the OEM to solve scanner and paper path image quality issues with pixel registration along with scan head optical dust problems. Led a cross-functional team on the design and development of common front control panels and developed a reduced international Qwerty Keyboard design for the LaserJet 4100MFP. Established Design Target Agreement, Image Quality test plan and External Reference Specification documents for multiple MFP platforms and developed targets to evaluate Image Quality performance. Reviewed and evaluated multiple external OEM scanner suppliers on Image Quality and taught a site wide Scanning Fundamentals courses. Established a site wide Scan Quality team to work on common measurement procedures for scanners and worked with other teams to understand their Image Quality issues. Member of the Product Steward / Green Team for scanner environmental issues.

Sole mechanical engineer, responsible for the development of LaserJet Companion scanner. Worked with electrical and software engineers to understand paper motion and image quality issues. Developed all new procedures to test scanners in Life Test and was a member of the transition team. Established the Design Target Agreement, External Reference Specification and Life Test Plan documents. Worked with and led technical discussions with OEM to solve reliability and design issues critical to the project’s success. Developed a color scanning specification and testing procedure for new scanner products. Implemented color scanning notes and knowledge into a class, which exposed engineers to the basics and issues of different color scanning technologies. Worked on device independent color space conversions for correct colorimetric appearances with a color contact image sensor.

Became a recognized industry leader in the area of HALT and HASS, using six degree of freedom shock and rapid thermal cycling techniques. Brought in and established a 6DOF machine, and instructed others on its use and background. Established a way to test disk drives with the PCA separated from the HDA. Worked with the disk drive groups and storage systems business in the areas of quality and reliability. Did analysis on data using Weibul plots looking for field failure issues and was instrumental in implementing changes in current products to improve reliability. Taught a site wide ANSI Y14.5M course, and spoke to other HP sites on the subject of STRIFE and ESS and how they relate to time to market and reliability. Developed a Windows program for reliability calculations on sample sizes and total reliability for a system.

Designed and developed optical potentiometer. Responsible for conceptualization, design, and procurement of plastic injected molded, stamped sheet metal, chemically etched, and zinc die cast parts. Established the reliability plan and testing procedures for the product, and evaluated suppliers on their TQC/SQC practices. Used QFD and SDE design processes as well as material selection and vendor capabilities to develop and evaluate a detent design that received a US patent (4 million rotation, previous design 100k). Created CAD drawings and FAI documents as well as tolerances acceptable for parts by using GD&T (ANSI Y14.5M-1982). Designed product for manufacturability and did hardware design for assembly fixtures, hystersis tester, and torque tester equipment. Established a manufacturing line in San Jose before transferring a second product line to Singapore.
