Works in the Tribal Evaluation Practice Area as the Project Director for the Tribal Evaluation Institute and on the BIRCH Study, a formative research study to explore protective factors against ACEs and opioid misuse among tribal communities.

Assisted the Program Assessment Branch in evaluating biomedical research within the NCI and completed deliverables for the American Evaluation Association (AEA) leadership. Developed program evaluation reports for intramural scientists, and prepared associated presentation materials. Co-facilitated a presentation on culturally responsive evaluation to NCI staff. Assisted NIAAA in the completion of a comprehensive literature review of substance abuse prevention and treatment interventions for American Indians and Alaska Natives. Assisted in the management of the trans-NIH Native American/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian research interest group.

Led the development, implementation, and analysis of an evaluation of the text4baby service. Completed a content analysis of the text4baby text messages and conducted a pre/posttest evaluation of the service. Triangulated the findings to examine how constructs from health behavior change theory, incorporated into the messages, influenced pregnant women’s attitudes, knowledge, and behavior. Assisted in the development, implementation, and analysis of an evaluation of the integration of health literacy standards into second grade curriculum at a Maryland elementary school. Presented findings to the stakeholders (School Board and funders), and used findings to create an evaluation instrument to be used with other elementary students. Awarded a SEED grant to assist in the development of a text-message library for increasing family physical activity. Conducted formative research in the form of focus groups with parents of preschoolers, to inform the creation of the message library. Assisted in the formative research phase of a healthy literacy campaign to support the Health Enterprise Zone initiative in Prince George’s County.

Mentored over 40 undergraduate interns through their semester placement at various internship sites. Led small group discussions and provided presentations to undergraduate interns. Conducted site visits and conference calls with intern Site Supervisors. Maintained highly organized databases of intern work, intern communication, and internship sites.

Conducted quantitative research for the national evaluation of Methamphetamine and Suicide Prevention Initiative (MSPI) through the Indian Health Service. Assisted with the development and implementation of the research design, data collection, data analysis, and report writing for both the local and the national evaluations for the MSPI. Provided technical assistance (TA) to 127 MSPI funded recipients. Participated in site visits to observe individual program implementation and engage MSPI grantees in the development of multi-site evaluation design. Contributed to the planning and facilitation of the MSPI annual conferences. Managed the design and maintenance of the MSPI portal website. Supported technical assistance for the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) component of the Division of Services Improvement (DSI) project, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Provided TA to the Tribal Consultation Advisory Committee about public health issues, policies, and programs to be used in consultation with the outcome-based evaluation tool to assess the Public Health Summer Fellows Program at the Morehouse School of Medicine and the NIHB Public Health Summit. Assisted in the development of the Restoring the Balance Initiative through Web site content and design and through strategic dissemination of brochures to tribal leaders and health facilities in Indian Country. Participated in and exhibited at meetings, conferences, and events that addressed public health and/or American Indian/Alaska Native health. Provided data on current public health topics (e.g., obesity, diabetes) to the legislative director of NIHB to support policy development. Headed the development of NIHB’s Childhood Obesity Initiative, which involved program and policy development, survey dissemination, data analysis, and meeting planning.
