A dual qualified Environmental Engineer/Scientist, Erica Deegan is based in the Syrinx Launceston office. She provides technical advice and support to a variety of projects across Tasmania and further afield. Erica has a background in environmental and coastal engineering and science. She is able to effectively combine skills from both engineering and scientific backgrounds and is experienced in consulting for a range of clients (all scales of governments, private industry and tertiary institutions) on multifaceted projects.Erica works within the Syrinx team conducting environmental monitoring, as well as data analysis, project management and report writing. She enjoys the challenge of finding solutions to complex problems. Passionate about the environment, Erica likes to collaborate with others for the betterment of our natural habitat and society.

Working with other members of the UTAS Academic Scheduling Team to optimise the timetable for students and staff across all campuses.I was part of a pilot program in the development of the 2015 timetable, where several staff were employed to look after different areas of the University. My focus during this time was the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology. This project ended in March 2015, however the Faculty opted to continue funding for my position following the completion of this project due to the excellent outcomes they received during the trial.

I have worked as a Project Engineer at the UNSW Water Research Laboratory (WRL) since completion of my university studies in late 2011. My work at WRL has been multi-disciplinary and includes:• Boat wave/riverbank vulnerability assessments,• Coastal engineering design,• Coastal hazard assessment,• Coastal imaging collection and processing using the ARGUS system,• Critical literature reviews, recommendations and advice for state and federal government,• Physical modelling,• Numerical wave modelling, and• Numerical modelling of ocean outfalls.I have been co-author on over 15 technical and research reports, and am experienced in using ArcGIS, Matlab and the Coastal Engineering Design and Analysis System (CEDAS), as well as the wave model SWAN and near-field jet modelling using JETLAG and CORJET. I am proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Project. Further, I have experience in the Wordpress content management system for websites, through my management of the WRL Coastal Imaging Website.I have presented my work at three major conferences:• 2014 Australian Coastal Councils Conference, presenting “Beach Width: the Ideal, Expectations and Observations”• 2013 Coasts and Ports Conference, presenting “A Tale of Two Rivers: Riverbank Vulnerability and Boat Wake Wave Assessments along Two Coastal Rivers”, and• 2011 International Rip Current Symposium presenting “Global and Regional Variations in Rip Current Spacing”.Following my relocation to Tasmania in April 2014 I worked on a casual basis for the UNSW Water Research Laboratory for approximately 12 months.

Academic tutor employed by the UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Leading tutorials for up to 40 students, as well as some marking, for the following subjects:• CVEN2501 – Principles of Water Engineering• CVEN3101 – Engineering Operations• CVEN1701 – Environmental PrinciplesEmployment as an academic tutor was both challenging and rewarding. Teaching fellow students developed my communication skills, including my ability to concisely explain technical concepts.

Represented the Faculty of Engineering at promotional events for prospective students. Employment as a student ambassador required excellent communication skills to explain the undergraduate engineering programs to prospective students, as well as their parents and teachers.

Leading six day trips along the Overland Track during the peak summer season for five summers. A high level of independence and self-reliance is required for this position, as you are not able to communicate with superiors. Whilst working as a guide I learned to solve problems and make decisions quickly, using all the available information to produce the best outcome for my clients as well as myself, sometimes in high pressure situations.
