About Eric Johnson
Medical Anatomy/Neuroanatomy/Embryology/Histology educator with research interests in human variation and bioinformatics.I split my efforts between my medical education responsibilities and research. I am the co-course director for the Gross Anatomy course at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. I also participate heavily in the Neuroanatomy course, for which I was a course director. My duties include lecturing in anatomy, neuroanatomy, embryology, and histology as well as participating in anatomy and histology labs. My research interests focus around the HudsonAlpha CODE project. Each year I guide 10-15 medical students in their research examining human genetic variations of unknown significance using bioinformatics tools. I am also one of the members of the CODE project advisement committee. To supplement the bioinformatics research, I spend the summer guiding students in bench research experiments testing various protein variations.I obtained my position at ACOM after several intense years of training in the anatomical sciences. My position at Central New Mexico Community college introduced me to anatomy and physiology education at the undergraduate level. I was fortunate enough to take the Human Anatomy Education Certificate under the supervision of Thomas Estenson, Ph.D. I subsequently assisted as a gross anatomy instructor at UNM for both the medical school and physical therapy program under the guidance of Rebecca Hartley, Ph.D., Paul McGuire, Ph.D., and Beth Jones, DPT. My transition to an instructor follows a successful research career. I contributed to several discoveries on the function of FMRP during adult neurogenesis. I produced the groundbreaking work on LRP4 while I was in graduate school. My discoveries showed that LRP4 is essential for patterning during embyogenesis in the limbs, kidneys, and teeth. My background allows me to be a more informed instructor. Specialties: anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy, histology, education, neuroscience, adult neurogenesis, molecular biology, biochemistry, cellular biology, vertebrate genetics, cell signaling, diabetes, congenital disorders, mental retardation, Lrp4, Fmr1, multiple sclerosis, mouse work, protein interactions, leadership, team, expression staining, Western, PCR, communication, proposal preparation, grants, committee, human genetic variation, bioinformatics.
Listed skills include Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, and 16 others.

Adjunct Assistant Professor
At the UNM Medical School, I am contributing to the Human Structure, Function, and Disease block for the first year medical student and physician assistant program. I attend lectures for embryology, histology, anatomy, and physiology so that I have the knowledge base necessary to give those lectures in the future. I assist and quiz students during the cadaver lab. I help lead the Team-Based Learning exercises at the end of each section. I help set up the cadaver lab practical exams. After this block is finished, I will help the physical therapy program lab and sit in on the neuroscience block sessions.

I am focused on developing my teaching philosophy and mastery of anatomy and physiology at CNM. I employ many modern techniques such as group-learning and online media to improve student performance.
Postdoctoral Fellow
I was in the lab of Xinyu Zhao in the department of Neurosciences working on the function of FMRP in adult neural stem cells during neurogenesis. I am using a conditional inducible mouse genetic system to selectively eliminate FMRP expression in adult neural progenitors.
Research Associate
Worked under the guidance of Paul Conlon, Ph.D. for one year as an undergraduate intern and three years as a full-time employee.
