As part of a rapidly growing company, my responsibilities have been both broad and technically demanding. My experiences have exercised a wide variety of engineering talents, from architectural definition to preliminary configuration and sizing studies, on through detail design, release, and physical testing.

Proprietor of a small business start-up. Oversees and conducts design, manufacturing, marketing, and sales of photographic lighting accessories for the amateur and professional markets.

The goal of my work is to create thermally actuated morphing structures using high temperature composite materials, including titanium-based MMCs and C/SiC CMCs. The bimetallic strip is a very basic example of such a structure, however the use of composite materials teamed with novel simulation capability are opening the door towards advanced applications. These include variable geometry turbine vanes, passive thermal control systems, and high-temperature aerodynamic control surfaces. Funding for my PhD was awarded based on two successful research proposals for which I was the primary author, with each award valued in the five-figures.My research activities are very broadly defined, and include advanced structural modelling, materials processing and characterization, as well as test-rig design and thermo-structural testing. This great variety of experience has allowed me to build a very broad skill set, not to mention teaching me many intangible lessons of research and development.My work has involved the creation of advanced modelling techniques, however novel manufacturing methods also had to be devised in order to bring my concepts to reality. In the course of my work, I have built a low-cost, prototype level facility for in-house manufacturing of CMC laminates, which has allowed conceptual ideas to be rapidly iterated in a relatively low-cost manner. Not only has this given me a great deal of hands-on experience with these advanced materials, but it has also allowed me to compress technical development into the short timeframes demanded by PhD-level research.

The highlight of this position was designing, building, and conducting research with an intermediate velocity gas gun, with an end goal of better understanding the role and potential benefits of flexible interlayers in laminated transparent armor.

Involved in design, structural analysis, and lifing of gas turbine hot section structures for the civil aviation market, as well as other projects including experimental structural dynamics and hot-fire CMC coupon tests.
