Bethlehem Outreach Committee - helps strengthen the relationship between Lehigh University and Southside Bethlehem; initiated Swipe Away Hunger campaign to reduce food waste on campus; brought awareness to student conduct in SouthSide Bethlehem; increased student engagement with small businesses in SouthSide BethlehemWhile on the Bethlehem Outreach Committee in the Student Senate, I noticed two distinct problems: (1) many students let countless meal swipes go to waste at the end of the semester, and (2) food insecurity is a significant problem in Bethlehem and the community surrounding Lehigh. So, I contacted the Community Service Office to brainstorm one solution to address both these problems. The solution: a program and initiative to encourage Lehigh students to "Swipe Away Hunger" by using their extra meal swipes at the end of the semester to purchase nonperishable items to bring to the CSO, which would then be distributed to residents in Bethlehem.This experience marked a significant learning milestone for me, as it represented my first major challenge since arriving at Lehigh University. It underscored the vital lessons of collaboration, leadership, and community awareness.In tackling these issues, I realized the importance of leveraging all available resources, which often includes the collective power of different individuals. My collaboration with the Community Service Office (CSO) exemplified how involving various stakeholders can enhance the problem-solving process, making the initiative more effective.Moreover, this experience deepened my understanding of the local community's needs and challenges. Recognizing the issues faced by our neighbors in Bethlehem was a crucial aspect of this initiative. It reinforced the notion that to be a positive force for change, one must be aware of the community's circumstances and consider how to intervene effectively to provide support.
