Eric Mar, Emeritus Professor at San Francisco State University was elected to the SF Board of Supervisors 2008 - 2017. He represented the City's Richmond District. Mar previously served as: president, SF Board of Education; shop steward, SEIU 790 (now SEIU 1021); Acting Chair, SF County Transportation Authority; & Chair, Bay Area Air Quality Management District Board. He has been active since the early 1980’s as an organizer & leader in movements for immigrant rights, workers’ empowerment & educational justice. He also served from 2013-17 on the Executive Cmtee of the Assn of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and as Vice-Chair of the SF Democratic Party where he has been active in the struggle to reform the Democratic Party on the local DCCC since 1996.Mar taught Asian American & Ethnic Studies at SF State University from 1992-2008 & 2017-20. His courses included Asians in America, Immigrant Rights, Law & Public Policy-Making, Social Movements & Community Change & Asians in America. From 93-97 he was the Asst Dean & Acting Dean for New College of CA Law School where he taught a course on critical race theory. He is past director of Northern CA Coalition for Immigrant Rights & longtime member of the Chinese Progressive Association & APALA [Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance]. He is a past executive board member of the Bay Area Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, & the SF Media Alliance. Mar is also a founding member of APIforCE (Asians & Pacific Islanders for Community Empowerment), the Asian Left Forum, & Institute for Multiracial Justice. As a public interest attorney Mar has served on the Human Rights Committee for the State Bar of CA & the Civil Rights Committee of the National APA Bar Assn. He lives with his daughter Jade on SF's Ocean Beach.
