In this hyper-growth stage start-up (series D/E), I set out to learn the lean practice of the company and the end-to-end design operation. As a junior product designer for the billing/invoicing experience, I worked under the guidance of our design manager in the legal practice management's 'back-office' domain, along with designers from payment and accounting. I got to work very closely with the product manager and software developers on an end-to-end project that resulted in the feature release of Outstanding Balance. To develop and support the core UI framework / design system for our business unit, I created and iterated on 50+ design specs and usage guidelines during my time there, ranging from atomic level UI components to complex UX patterns and organisms with variant tokens. As a result, the teams in the division were able to deliver 50% more high-quality web applications in our network management platform than previous years, and the web apps are updated with modern UX principles.Main part of my role involved coordinating design presentations, reviews, and brainstorm sessions with senior UX designers, visual designers, developers, and technical writers. These rituals got buy-ins and incorporated various considerations into the designs. I then created detailed specs and documentations, capturing everything from high-level user goals to ground-level design choices and rationales. Working closely with software developers in core and domain teams, I helped implement React-based components with modern web standards. I also supported the design system by hosting regular division-wide front-end developer check-ins, as well as being the point-person for relevant questions. The culmination of the design system work was an internal React-based demo and documentation site, which I researched, designed, and contributed production code for. It involved cross-division users (designers, developers, QA) and stakeholders. In a one-off design research study for this wearable health-tech start-up (pre-seed), I helped recruit a dozen participants from the field (near bike paths, bike sheds) and from physical flyers, to participate in a lab study. I set up the testing equipment and moderated sessions with participants, using a mix of paper questionnaires, interview, and observation of participants using "paper" phone mock-ups on a bike as well as soft-goods mock-ups. In preparation of the study, I worked closely with the lead designer and a fellow researcher to understand the objectives and research method. I then analyzed the findings with the fellow researcher and presented the findings to stakeholders.Skills used:• Usability testing• Participant/user recruitment• Observation• Research analysis

In this internship at a business intelligence web/mobile app start-up (series A), I worked with the UX architect to iterate on wireframes for web and mobile app concepts, as well as to produce web graphics, pitch deck slides, and visual assets. Conducted telephone interviews (Canadian and US outbound calls) following various public opinion survey scripts, in a way that communicates professionalism and confidence. I adjusted my talking speed based on my assessment of the respondent's mood, while always maintaining an articulate, neutral, and verbatim delivery to read out the questions and options.
