I create multi-layered artworks using paper and CNC lasers. On average each artwork consists of over one hundred layers of paper. The deepest piece to date is made up of two hundred and eighty-four layers. My process for a single artwork can take months and sometimes years to complete. Drawing is at the core of my studio practice as compositions are determined by subtracting material from each sheet of paper and pre-visualizing the sum of the layers as line, color and volume. The process begins in my sketch book as a series of “events” in the vein of key framing. The accumulated events are recreated as digital vector drawings where I begin building consciously woven spaces.I am dyslexic and I instinctively process thought as visual metaphors that occupy imagined space. This vantage point is like a map; I must understand the holistic negative space around an idea and the context in which it exists in order for me to understand the specific, immediate detail. The conceptual motivation for my artwork utilizes my automatic process of mapping specific paradoxes into spatial geometry and color. These paradoxes come from literature, mythology, life experiences and most recently chromatin packing. The geometry and fractals that trigger a base familiarity prior to sign recognition emerge from my visual metaphors as archetypes. If I had to categorize where my artwork fits into the fabric of contemporary art, I would say it is essentialism. My purpose is to provide physical examples of essence prior to existence. I seek archetypes that are eternally familiar to humanity but perhaps have yet to be witnessed. I have a confirming sense that there is always a broader impact of any given thing. Archetypes transcend local and immediate signification which is why I am attracted to them.
