Intern, Economic Development Services

City Of Tacoma, Community And Economic Development

Tacoma, Washington, United States

In addition to providing marketing support, I assisted with business development proposals and market research using CoStar and Business Analyst Online. I acted as administrator for the newly implemented Salesforce, configuring fields and reports in alignment with strategic work and leading trainings for staff. I worked across department divisions to produce annual reports, interviewing staff about their achievements and ensuring that the information was communicated accurately to members of the City Council, the City Manager’s Office and members of the community. A highlight from this experience was supporting a Technical Assistance Panel from the Urban Land Institute on Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) in Tacoma’s Dome District. To begin the process, we worked together to identify stakeholders for group interviews to inform recommendations. With the support of Planning and Development Services, Public Works and GIS, we also created a briefing book that provided context for the panel’s recommendations. In addition to compiling and formatting the briefing book, I provided logistical support for the panel day and created a Google map + worksheet for notetaking. In preparation for the panel briefing, I managed an external contract with VIA Architecture, who created 3D renderings of current and potential building envelopes based on regulatory and market realities. To assist with the creation of these models, I used DART to create maps of publicly owned parcels in the district and provided zoning and growth metrics based on Puget Sound Regional Council’s growth allocations for population and employment in Tacoma's South Downtown Subarea. In further support of TOD efforts, I worked with our GIS team to develop a mapping application for tracking permitted, multifamily and mixed use development projects within a ten-minute walkshed of Pierce Transit stations and Tacoma Link stops. The application can be updated with data from Accela and used to create graphic maps.

The largest of these sales were to a spa and to a restaurant, where artwork is displayed throughout the businesses.

Administrative Assistant

Vancouver, Wa

Making good things happen in #dtVANwa! As the Administrative Assistant for Vancouver's Downtown Association, I worked closely with the Executive Director to support our board, volunteers, and community partners on the planning and implementation of Main Street Transformative Strategies. These revitalization programs combine local and regional market data with inclusive community engagement to improve the Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion and Organization of city centers. I thrived under the strong leadership style and in the fast-paced environment offered by the organization. In addition to hosting quarterly breakfasts with up to several hundred guests, we organized and promoted monthly art walks. We came up with the #dtVANwa tag to encourage placemaking through social media and promoted it through the distribution of rocks painted by the community. We implemented the Word on the Street Program, which offered small businesses guidance on façade improvement and online marketing. To support placemaking, we planned and implemented two major projects. We organized a public art project, Rainku, where we put out a call for poets to write haiku about their experience downtown. I worked closely with our printer to create stencils of the poems, troubleshooting the size needed to fit inside sidewalk squares. We then used Rainworks water activated spray to install the poems on the sidewalks throughout downtown, where they only showed up in the rain. The second project was Downtown Pedals. We brought together Art ala Carte, a local business specializing in art buffet parties for kids, Bike Clark County, and the Hough Foundation to plan the shortest, cutest bike parade of all time. Kids gathered to decorate their bikes before riding them down Main Street, led by Couve Cycle, a 15-passenger bike. They ended their parade with a little block party where we had rootbeer floats, live music, and a parked CTRAN bus where they could learn to load their bikes on public transit.
