At UpStart, I played a pivotal role in enhancing our Kubernetes infrastructure and supporting ephemeral environments for all teams. My work centered on developing and maintaining essential APIs and Operators that helped drive efficiency and innovation within the company.Key Responsibilities:- Monitored and supported ephemeral environments in Kubernetes ephemeral clusters.- Developed, monitored, and maintained 8+ Kubernetes operators using Golang and Operator SDK.- Created, monitored, and maintained several Golang/gin-gonic APIs for overseeing ephemeral environments.Key Achievements:- Implemented a cost attribution system for ephemeral environments using Helm, DataDog, and CloudZero.- Designed and implemented a shared event bus schema, enhancing communication across ephemeral environments.- Developed an API in Golang/gin-gonic to streamline the control of ephemeral environments.- Integrated our ephemeral API with UpStart’s Escape Velocity Backstage pluginj via gRPC, improving system interoperability.In this role, I leveraged my expertise in Kubernetes, Golang, and API development to ensure the robustness and scalability of UpStart's infrastructure. ● Designed, planned, and led the implementation of Doma’s new Cloud Platform app deployment system, allowing 100% of our apps to be easily deployed to Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).● Engineered an automated system to create VMs used to run a Windows Transaction Process Service, allowing devs to quickly spin them up as needed for automated testing.● Architected and drove multiple CI/CD improvement projects that cumulatively reduced deploy pipeline times (p95) by 75%, also increasing the CI success rate of the `main` branch to 100%.● Implemented several SumoLogic integrations with GitHub, CircleCI, and Opsgenie using a Python/Click CLI, enabling DORA metrics via dashboards and giving teams visibility into their ability to ship software effectively and without incidents.● Designed and built a backend service in TypeScript/Express which handled all incoming and outgoing emails in our new Transaction Processing Service, allowing the new UI and its components to utilize email functionality.

Created Angular.js/Node.js/Express.js web apps, while working closely with the Tendril website creative team to empower our customers.● Designed and developed a massive refactor for the Orchestrated Energy (OE) team’s main machine learning service, allowing more accurate power usage prediction in multi-thermostat homes. The refactor enabled 20% of OE’s customers to take advantage of increase power savings every month.● Reduced build times on my team’s largest backend service by roughly 50% in my first month, freeing up several minutes for 2-5 engineers/scientists 10+ times a day. The resulting freed time was then able to be used for more meaningful work and innovation.● Championed cross-functionality between software engineers and data scientists by holding regular architecture and dataflow learning sessions, allowing the least senior member who had taken it at least once to teach it. This helped foster cross-functional ownership, awareness, and comradery.● Built Continuous Integration/Deployment pipeline templates using Jenkins enabling teams working with Node.js to deploy smaller changes many times per day rather than once a day. This also enabled engineers to automate integration and cross-service testing, reducing rollback frequency.● Created a customer-facing web app for automating Demand Response Events, allowing our customers to see in real-time how much load they could shift given a specific set of homes and times. This gave the power companies the ability to more accurately predict power resource needs, potentially saving unnecessary power plant spin-ups.
