Profile bio

About Erik Rogers

My career objectives are three-fold. 1.) Become a member of the right team-on which my unique skill set and experience compliment those of the team as a cohesive unit and ensure the maximum value of my contribution to achieving team goals as well as individual projects of any team member. 2.) Consistently conduct my research and myself in a manner that fosters a collaborative and self-motivational work environment by welcoming all perspectives, ideas and suggestions whether in the context of a group or individual project. 3.) Always remember that the heart of clinical/biomedical research beats in the patients we are serving. All patients are among the parents, children, family and friends of all of us in the global human community. I am driven to contribute to improving patient outcomes. Two events shaped my career aspirations. The first was when my step-father was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. In a few weeks, he succumbed to his own cell's inability to self-regulate. The next was when my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. One night her heart stopped twice, as I watched helplessly, due to congestive heart failure. She's alive today thanks to a stint placed in her left descending aorta that night by an extraordinary man. During the first few, uncertain days she was in the ICU, I looked into the published research literature and found substantial clinical data that suggested her congestive heart failure was an unintended consequence of her high levels of exposure to the monoclonal antibody to the Her2 antigen. This same treatment is the key component of the clinical strategy that led to the reduction or elimination her cancer burden. The other indispensable factor in her survival is her refusal to submit. These events have changed my perspective on the role of research I now see as a proactive source of translational solutions and helping patients find that desire to stick around that is so instrumental to improving overall outcomes.
