But can intrinsic motivation be built? Yes. By helping people connect with three things:Purpose, autonomy, and mastery.Purpose: I constantly refocus attention back to the mission, even with small things – by helping people to see why they're important – as well as much bigger initiatives like restructuring, budget cutting, and the other major transitions I've led and contributed to.Autonomy & mastery: I help team members build mastery by giving them autonomy, encouraging them to take ownership and come up with their own solutions. And I make a point of acknowledging their skills and talents.And in fact, I've worked with very highly motivated and caring teams at Listen & Talk and at Boys & Girls Clubs, through times of intense change and rapid growth. Together we've improved efficiency, grown fundraising and revenues, and served ever-greater numbers of children.
