Hello, I'm Erin, a passionate organic geochemist, astrobiologist, and planetary scientist! I earned my Ph.D. in Earth & Planetary Science from McGill University in 2023 and completed my bachelor's in Earth & Environmental Science at McMaster University in 2017. My research focuses on extreme environments around our world, exploring the ecology and lipid biosignatures of microbial communities surviving near the limits of life's tolerance. This work serves as a blueprint for understanding potential extraterrestrial life, notably on Mars, and contributes to our knowledge of life under extreme conditions, which holds implications for understanding climate change impacts. In the past decade, I've taken on leadership and team roles in various large, multi-national research teams. In 2017, I contributed as a field team member and organic geochemistry researcher with NASA's BASALT program, exploring Mars-like volcanic terrains in Idaho and Hawai'i. During my PhD, I pioneered novel data processing pipelines to enhance the scientific output of our active Mars rovers. And most recently, I led a research expedition to Iceland, focusing on understanding the production and preservation of microbial lipid biosignatures in glaciovolcanic settings. In addition, I am a member of the operational and science teams of NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover, currently in search of signs of fossilized life on Mars. My responsibilities include designing experiments for the SuperCam instrument, analyzing preliminary results, participating in team discussions, and helping to strategize the rover's exploration plan. I am equally passionate about making science an equitable career space. I actively volunteer with equity, inclusion, and diversity groups, as well as early career advocacy teams. Additionally, I am enthusiastic about sharing my personal scientific journey through outreach, including public science talks, seminars, workshops, and popular science articles.Beyond academia, I find joy in exploring the outdoors through running, hiking, scuba diving, and photography. Eager to continue learning, I aspire to fly small aircraft and become a proficient rock climber, expanding my perspectives on our beautiful planet. Let's connect and explore the intersection of science, exploration, and diversity!

Vice President InternalSeds Canada May 2018 - Jun 2019SEDS -Canaada is a non-profit designed to engage and empower students to make an impact in space exploration. I served as the Vice President Internal where I helped to develop experiential learning opportunities and connect students with professional mentors. For instance, I co-organized the 2018 Toronto edition of SpaceApp, an international hack-a-thon comprised of 187 events across 6 continents that attracts 25,000+ participants. I co-organized our annual science conference, Ascension, by planning logistics, securing funding, and reviewing student abstracts. -

Technical experience with petrographc microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, Raman spectroscopy, and wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrscopy. -
Undergraduate Research AssistantMcmaster University May 2016 - Apr 2017HamiltonDuring my undergraduate studies I was selected as a student science collaborator with NASA's BASALT (Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains) research program, a high-fidelity simulation of a human-led Mars exploration missions. I was awarded an Undergraduate Student Research Award to characterize the microbial ecology of Mars-like volcanic rock samples using geochemical analyses in the field as well as chromatographic and molecular chemistry techniques in the laboratory. In this role I was required to work under strict mission regulations and aggressive deadlines.I was promoted to Field Science Lead, in which I was responsible for training, leading, and motivating the expedition team during the daily 4-6 hour excursions through remote volcanic terrains in Idaho, USA. The expedition team consisted of a diverse suite of students, scientists, engineers, mission specialists, and astronauts and I rapidly learned how to effectively communicate upward, downward, and laterally within the team. I gined technical experience using liquid-liquid lipid extraction, high-performance liquid chromatography, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. -
