About Erin Gibbons
Hello, I'm Erin, a passionate organic geochemist, astrobiologist, and planetary scientist! I earned my Ph.D. in Earth & Planetary Science from McGill University in 2023 and completed my bachelor's in Earth & Environmental Science at McMaster University in 2017. My research focuses on extreme environments around our world, exploring the ecology and lipid biosignatures of microbial communities surviving near the limits of life's tolerance. This work serves as a blueprint for understanding potential extraterrestrial life, notably on Mars, and contributes to our knowledge of life under extreme conditions, which holds implications for understanding climate change impacts. In the past decade, I've taken on leadership and team roles in various large, multi-national research teams. In 2017, I contributed as a field team member and organic geochemistry researcher with NASA's BASALT program, exploring Mars-like volcanic terrains in Idaho and Hawai'i. During my PhD, I pioneered novel data processing pipelines to enhance the scientific output of our active Mars rovers. And most recently, I led a research expedition to Iceland, focusing on understanding the production and preservation of microbial lipid biosignatures in glaciovolcanic settings. In addition, I am a member of the operational and science teams of NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover, currently in search of signs of fossilized life on Mars. My responsibilities include designing experiments for the SuperCam instrument, analyzing preliminary results, participating in team discussions, and helping to strategize the rover's exploration plan. I am equally passionate about making science an equitable career space. I actively volunteer with equity, inclusion, and diversity groups, as well as early career advocacy teams. Additionally, I am enthusiastic about sharing my personal scientific journey through outreach, including public science talks, seminars, workshops, and popular science articles.Beyond academia, I find joy in exploring the outdoors through running, hiking, scuba diving, and photography. Eager to continue learning, I aspire to fly small aircraft and become a proficient rock climber, expanding my perspectives on our beautiful planet. Let's connect and explore the intersection of science, exploration, and diversity!
