Business leaders, do you find yourself having to choose between candidates with technical know-how and those with interpersonal skills? The future of business requires both! When today’s job candidates – especially from diverse or underserved communities – combine soft skills with technical knowledge, they will be unstoppable in the competitive marketplace. And that benefits everyone, especially in our turbulent times! At the Center for Third Space Thinking, our mission is to empower everyone, from youth to executives, with the essential communication and problem-solving skills required to thrive throughout the lifecycle of leadership.Throughout my life and career, liaising with people of different cultures and backgrounds in both the public and private sector, I discovered five attributes that help all learners, workers, and leaders think more clearly:⇨ Adaptability⇨ Cultural Competence ⇨ Empathy⇨ Intellectual Curiosity ⇨ 360 Degree Thinking The ideas for my Third Space framework grew out of fascinating conversations with Hollywood executives, Silicon Valley visionaries, community leaders in South Central Los Angeles, knowledge leaders in Beijing, African heads of state, United Nations experts, and bright and energetic Millennials.⇨ I’ve worked with Google, IBM, United, Viacom, the government of China, Robert Half, World Bank, the White House, and the CFR.From a young age, I've navigated diverse communities. I grew up in Washington, DC (my father was an educator at Howard University), went to a segregated high school, and was the fourth member of my family to attend Harvard University, before traveling around the world as an educator, explorer, and communicator. I’ve advised senior levels of government in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Having spent 10 years as Dean of the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California, in 2017 I left that position to start the Center, under the University’s banner. For fun, I read historical biographies, as they give me insight into the challenges that we face today. If you:⇨ Have strategic responsibility for a large institution or organization ⇨ Are in a position where it is your job to think about the future⇨ Want to expand your soft skills to future-proof your career or business⇨ Are looking for a speaker or consultant for your business or organization💻 Visit USCThirdSpace.com✉ Email Ejwilson3@gmail.comLearn more in the links below.Specialties: Leadership | Soft Skills | Digital Skills | Innovation | Inclusion | Education

DeanUsc Annenberg School For Communication And Journalism Nov 2007 - Jul 2017Los Angeles, California, United StatesAs Dean of the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California, reporting to the Provost and President, I provided strategic leadership and operational guidance, and spearheaded fundraising for the school, raising $175 million.During my time at USC, I established the School as a leading body in the world of communications, journalism, and public relations. I restructured the entire school, merging distinct and separate units into a well-integrated collaborative institution, and built a brand new $60 million state of the art building. Working with other Deans, I created joint degree programs with the Business School, Engineering School, Cinema School, and International Affairs. I grew to be one of the leading experts in the field of strategic communication on topics, such as technological convergence, government policies, laws and regulations, and digital inclusion.During my tenure as Dean, the Annenberg School was selected as the best communications school in the World and described in the business press as one of the most innovative places in Los Angeles. The high quality education meant that 95% of our graduates were employed in a relevant field within 12 months of earning their diploma.Other highlights:⇨ I negotiated external partnerships with major corporations (Disney, Apple), leading international agencies (the World Bank), and key government bodies (Federal Communications Commission in the US and the Prime Minister’s Office in China).⇨ The Chinese government invited me to train the top 200 officials in the country in strategic communications and soft skills⇨ The Chairman of the FCC invited my team to propose a new way to measure the digital divide⇨ President-Elect Obama asked me to serve on his Transition Team After accomplishing all I wanted to achieve in a decade, I chose to launch a new, nimble company to expand my work in different areas … and raised more than a million dollars to do so. -
DirectorNational Security Council, The White House 1992 - 1995As Director of the National Security Council at The White House, reporting to the National Security Advisor, I was responsible for promoting democracy, coordinating international communication policies, and reforming international foreign aid. The most satisfying part of working at The White House was looking toward the future and helping the United States government agencies adjust to the radically new international conditions. After my time as Director of the National Security Council, I ventured to other opportunities, speaking for and consulting with companies and organizations around the world.
