Prior to joining Global Life Technologies Corp. in July of 2017 as Chief Science Officer, Dr. Spannhake served as Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore since 1982. After earning his PhD in Physiology at the University of Maryland, he joined the Department of Pharmacology faculty at the Tulane Medical School where he developed his research and training program in cardiopulmonary and respiratory pharmacology. He left as an Associate Professor to join colleagues at Johns Hopkins Public Health to pursue his interests in the interactions of the upper and lower airway epithelium with chemical and biological agents. He has authored over 100 scientific articles and chapters involving both basic science and clinical investigations. Dr. Spannhake's recent interests focus on the role of the microbiome of the anterior nares in nosocomial and community infection risk and the implementation of novel interventions through which reduction of this risk can be effectively achieved. At GLTC, his work involves product research and development and clinical trial design and implementation. Since his retirement in 2017, Dr. Spannhake retains his affiliation with Johns Hopkins Public Health through his appointment as Professor Emeritus and service in DrPH student advising and lecturing.
