Leading a research team of ca. 10 staff, associates and consultants, I advise high-profile clients like the Dutch, US and German foreign affairs ministries, multilaterals such as the UN, World Bank, EU and NATO, as well as CSOs on one of their hardest policy challenges: how to prevent, reduce or end violent conflict. For example:- Creating new insights into dealing with armed groups, mitigating civil war and reducing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that triggered broad interest in the European foreign policy community.- Advice on how to upgrade organizational capabilities to engage more effectively in violent conflict, mostly to the UN family and CSOs. I co-authored the Independent Review of UN Security Sector Reform work (2021-2022). - Co-development of a global network to improve the knowledge base for reducing conflict (‘Knowledge Platform Security and Rule of Law’).

I created informal coalitions among members of a prominent policy network (INCAF) that unites 20+ countries and international organizations to agree better common approaches and tools for dealing with fragility, conflict and instability. For instance:- Co-creation of the innovative ‘New Deal for Engagement in Fragile States’, committing 40+ countries/organizations to improve engagement in fragile states. - Putting ‘global drivers of conflict’ on the development policy agenda, such as liberalization, migration and organized crime, with new pathways for action. - Development of ideas for improving international support to peace processes and having these inform UN debate, together with the governments of Germany, Switzerland, the US and Norway.

The Hague Area, Netherlands

I led development initiatives aiming to increase the quality of security governance and security arrangements in post-conflict countries. For example:- Lead author of the Dutch government policy on fragile states.- Design and implementation of a large security sector development program in Burundi that was innovative in its governance setup, duration and working methods. - Co-creation of the ‘International Security Sector Advisory Team’ at DCAF as collective resource to improve the quality of security and justice interventions.- Negotiating a new strategic partnership with UNDP to improve access to justice across dozens of conflict-affected countries.
