They say don't let power go to your head. Well, in my case it did, literally!Since childhood, I had a penchant for tearing apart every electrical and electronic appliance or gadget in sight and putting it back together as were or modifying it. I took risks that nearly killed me, but the desire to one up on everything and push the envelope to the max, eventually led me to a place of power ... battery power.In 1990, when Sony Japan created and commercialized the first lithium product, an 18650-lithium cobalt cell, that without a protective mechanism, could very well have mimicked an IED, I took on the challenge of successfully creating a safety protocol with integrated charge and discharge functions, thus creating the first lithium Battery Management System (BMS) for lithium cells and eventually integrating it into a user-friendly product, leading to the creation of the first "lithium power bank" ... called the PowerLink 572 (5Ah/7.2v). Since then, there were a continuous string of “world firsts.” The next two-and-a-half decades were spent creating gee-whiz products and one-off solutions working with major Fortune 1000 firms, electronics OEM/product manufacturers, Prime Contractors, government agencies including the Department of Defense and NASA. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that our tiny firm would walk amongst the giants of the world. My best, most enjoyable time was spent during a 3-year stint developing affordable, Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) mini solar/battery solutions for the Base of the Pyramid . . . the world’s poorest people … to power their homes with clean solar energy, while eradicating deadly kerosene for cooking and lighting. Unfortunately, today it still remains more of a dream than a reality.
