VUHL is the #1 VA lender in the US. I joined as the company’s first Data Analyst to support gaps in reporting within VUHL’s subsidiaries Paddio and Neighbors Bank. My success led to a promotion to a dedicated Data Scientist role within a ~40 member Data Science department.My initial projects included:- Designed a comprehensive reporting suite for the two subsidiarity businesses using Tableau, SQL, Python, and multiple data sources (e.g. SQL Server, Hadoop, MySQL, scraped data). - Owned 20+ reports on Tableau Hub. - Worked on a team developing a logistic regression model to predict borrower attrition, identifying risk factors meant to inform loan teams. - Researched viability of automating underwriting to identify optimal times to request documents from a borrower. I then transitioned to a special project focused on R&D for LLM and Generative AI, which came about after I pitched the VP of Marketing on the potential for those technologies. After getting approval I executed multiple successful projects that led to the formation of a dedicated software engineering team to focus on GenAI/LLM work.Highlights: - Developed a model to automatically categorize notes from borrower phone calls that enabled comprehensive labeling of all notes, freeing up staff time for high-priority tasks. The categorized data served as input for other predictive models and was used for new KPIs to assess loan team performance. Presented project results to stakeholders, highlighting data quality, results from A/B testing, and Tableau dashboards tracking model performance.- Developed a Retrieval Augmented Generative Q&A tool to streamline the exceptions process during the home buying journey, built on Google Cloud, LangChain, GPT-4, and Gemini.- Led efforts on an AI transcription system using GCP’s Speech API and Deepgram, transforming phone calls into transcripts used for classification modeling, analytics, etc. Used the open source Whisper model.
