Graduate Research Assistant

Houston, Texas Area

I was a graduate research assistant at the National Wind Energy Center (NWEC) associated with the University of Houston. Funding was provided by the Department of Energy and the GAANN Fellowship from Fall 2012 - Summer 2015. I am working with Dr. Su Su Wang to improve and simulate the liquid stage of the vacuum assisted resin infusion composite manufacturing technique. Projects and responsibilities include:- Understanding the physical process of vacuum assisted resin infusion (i.e. resin reaction, fabric compression, Darcy flow, vacuum bag expansion, permeability, etc.) in order to minimize measurement errors and produce high quality parts.- Numerical simulation of the liquid stage of the VARIM process.- Understanding wind turbine blade composition and assembly.- Developing a method to determine 3D permeability of the spar cap of a wind turbine blade- Using user defined functions in ANSYS Fluent to simplify the numerical simulation of resin flow into a perforated foam core.- Managing the manufacturing laboratory and writing manufacturing and safety procedures that are crucial when dealing with heavy machinery, resins, release agents and maintaining a clean room. The lab layout has been redesigned to promote an efficient manufacturing process. When a ventilation issue was discovered, I worked with a team of engineers to find a cheap and effective way to significantly reduce the aerosol concentration in compliance with the material safety data sheets.
