About Ethan Robson

I’m a PhD research student in video game sound design. I’m studying selective attention regarding relative experience and how this could be used to improve player engagement, experience, and the game’s longevity. My research aims to provide a system that delivers nuance and increased variation to the player based on their relative skill level, thus improving the experience by enhancing auditory feedback. I’ve been working in audio since the age of 15, first in live sound and then a top of the range digital mixing console manufacturer, Digico. Video games have been my passion since before I can remember, the transition to sound design allows me to utilise my skills with my passion. After my Undergraduate degree, opportunities opened up for me in the form of two research projects. After working on these, I began to pursue a career in research through a PhD.

This project will involve establishing a method for capturing listeners' experiences of spatial audio in VR. Whilst wearing a Head Mounted Display (HMD), sounds will be presented to listeners who will be asked to indicate the relative position in both orientation and depth. This information will provide an insight into how effective existing Head Related Function Transfers (HRTFs) are for binaural presentation, as well as help assist in identifying approaches that are effective for communicating auditory spatial cues. A VR testing environment and an initial method has already been developed in Japan by Dr Julian Villegas from the University of Aizu, which this project is in collaboration with.

This project utilises Max to create a musical data sonification application. Participants download the data of a mountain biking exercise in CSV format. The application then receives the stream of data and sends the information to sonification objects within Max. "Sets" of music were created to be played at regular intervals so a full three or five minute song can be produced. In the latter stages of the project, sound design was implemented to increase user engagement.
