Founder - Technical + BusinessBamboo Systems Inc. Oct 1996 - Jun 1998With Sky Woo and Prabal Dutta, founded a company to help full-service stock brokerages compete with the likes of E*Trade using their extensive databases of customer and transaction information, combined with real-time market data, to present timely and relevant trading opportunities. Bamboo was an early entrant into the CRM space, which had neither been named nor formalized as such when we founded the company. This was a prototypical "young founders" startup -- we raised less than $250K in seed funding, built the initial product, achieved initial customer relationships (notably alex.brown in Baltimore) and ran the company for a total of about 20 months before grinding to a halt due to a combination of circumstances, poverty, and inexperience. I led the database development, led the marketing by default, and made the leap from tech. to biz. that I've stuck with (mostly) ever since. It was probably the most valuable job I'll ever hold in my life.

Systems EngineerEds Jun 1994 - Aug 1995Houston, Texas, UsMy first job out of college. Spent a year in Detroit on the "Cash Managment Team" for client GMAC, managing legacy infrastructure (IBM mainframes running COBOL), financial systems (Tandem NonStop Himalaya systems) and spec'ing new software (UNIX-based trading systems whose names now escape me). GMAC ran a trading floor with a volume of several billion dollars per day in commercial paper (CP) short term cash-like instruments to float consumer and dealer borrowing. In addition to learning a lot about legacy integration and maintenance, and large scale financial databases, I completed EDS' excellent technical training, lived in Plano, Texas for about six months, and at various times held more than a quarter of a billion dollars' worth of live, negotiable checks in my hands. After a year+ in this role, I left to take up my deferred NSF fellowship and admission to grad school at UC Berkeley. -
