I am a hands-on technology leader with over a decade of experience that includes guiding teams with up to seven members and driving four systems implementations from concept to deployment. In my previous role as Lead Software Engineer with IAG, I focused on leading a team in product development and infrastructure modernization initiatives. My background also includes nine years as a computer science instructor at Bob Jones University and several years in software development roles for two logistics companies. I also have several personal projects (see Projects section or my GitHub link for details).My technical areas of expertise include system design and architecture with a focus on underlying infrastructure design, and my project history spans embedded systems, web applications, APIs, DevOps, and distributed systems. I was hired to modernize IAG’s infrastructure and lead greenfield development for the PayrollPlans product as IAG targeted a new market, managing a seven-member team as a report to the CTO. During my tenure I have also hired four new staff.Project Highlights: - Mentored and guided day-to-day efforts of five developers, a DevOps specialist, and a systems administrator, with four reports receiving significant promotions in first two years in role.- Drove delivery of PayrollPlans, a new product built to expand IAG’s business model to include insurance for FTEs, with development in Java, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Vue.js, and TypeScript. Managed the development team, set milestones, and led code review. The project was launched and delivered in under two years, and now includes several integrations with third party vendor systems. - Guided strategy and execution for infrastructure modernization efforts that included redesign of cloud infrastructure using a combination of AWS ELB, EC2, Route 53, S3, EKS, ECR, IAM, and CloudWatch.- Introduced monitoring with multiple tools (e.g. Perfino, Prometheus, Grafana, Uptime Kuma, New Relic) to provide observability across 100% of the infrastructure and applications. - Introduced CI/CD processes using Bitbucket Pipelines and Jenkins that reduced deployment time by 66% and enabled zero downtime deployments. - Rewrote and refactored algorithms powering a legacy enrollment system to correct a major performance issue, reducing processing time for a core enrollment API from 24 hours to ~40 minutes.
