In-house assessment of junior soldiers general engineering principles and role specific capabilities to ensure they are prepared for NVQ assessors.Identified the root cause of electrical problems with a fleet of armoured vehicles in Afghanistan as inferior quality connectors and wiring in the loom. Set about redesigning the loom to ensure it was robust enough to stand up to the punishing environment. Carried out limited trials which proved successful and then rolled out the design to the wider fleet. Problems with the loom on this vehicle were causing hundreds of hours of unavailability across the theatre as well as an unacceptably high risk of failure while deployed in dangerous areas.Completed an 8 month tour of Afghanistan as an Equipment Maintenance Mentor to the Afghan National Army. Interaction with ANA vehicle mechanics on a daily basis, delivering instruction on the importance of a vast array of equipment support practices, including but not limited to; safe working practices, preventative maintenance, critical spare parts stock and keeping accurate maintenance and repair records. In addition to theoretical instruction, I applied my knowledge and experience to develop the engineering abilities of the ANA mechanics.
