Abbots Staith is a new initiative which is intended to bring a redundant building back into public use. Our group is intending to purchase the Abbots Staith Buildings currently derelict to regenerate it into a new community facility. The Staith will be a tourist attraction, Leisure facility and visitor centre working with and for the local community, economy and people. Once completed the building will be improved externally and internally and we envisage help to re-generate the Micklegate area of the town attracting further development. Specific areas of the building and it uses will create jobs and throughout the renovations a series of jobs will be created for small contractors which could be delivered by local companies. The age, history, character and location, with a frontage onto the busy market place, made this a compelling option for the project location. The steering group formed to take the project forward developed a strategy for publicising the project and securing initial funding, and formed a Community Interest Company with asset lock. The building and its restoration is essentially the vehicle to produce spaces for these activities, multi-purpose meeting / assembly spaces, gallery, studios, commercial work / office space, as well as hospitality (café / restaurant), micro-brewery.
