Profile bio

About Evan Compton

Since February, 2014, I have been working as a research assistant at the University of Calgary, under the supervision of Dr. Jeroen De Buck. I am developing a new diagnostic test for Johne’s disease, which affects dairy cows in Canada. This position ends on October 24th, 2014, and I am highly motivated to transition to another research position.Previously, I completed a research-based thesis in the field of immunology at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, where I graduated with a Master of Philosophy in Biological Sciences on July 19th, 2014. I was working in the laboratory of Professor John Trowsdale and my work focused on Type B T cells and autoimmunity. I designed my own project and a paper I wrote was accepted by the European Journal of Immunology. Additionally, I have eight months of medically-related research experience at the University of Alberta. I worked as a research assistant for Dr. Gina Rayat, whose goal is to use porcine islets as a xenograft for reversing Type 1 diabetes. I have extensive experience in gathering and analyzing data, independent and creative thinking as well as team work during both research experiences. I also worked extensively with biological specimens; I am very confident in my laboratory skills for processing tissue samples.Outside of research and clinical experiences, there are many experiences that highlight my passion for contributing to the scientific and medical community. For three years, I worked part time for my father at his dental specialist’s office; my duties included organizing patient files and lectures on cleft palate surgeries and various complex facial traumas. I am the Co-Creator of “Win4Skin”, a fundraiser in Edmonton for melanoma research that has been hugely successful in the past five years. Additionally, I was actively involved in a medical mission to Kenya; interacting with the patients at the various clinics and orphanages was one of the most rewarding aspects of the mission.

Listed skills include Research, Elisa, Flow Cytometry, Microsoft Word, and 13 others.
