About Evan Griffith
I am a One Health practitioner and 3rd year PhD Candidate at Tufts University. I specifically work with pastoralists in the drylands of East Africa on issues surrounding human and animal health, livelihoods, and climate change resilience. I received my DVM, MPH, and MS in Conservation Medicine from Tufts University. My PhD research focuses on developing, piloting, and validating the Community One Health Index—a new, participatory rapid assessment tool that will holistically assess health at the human-animal-environment interface. My focus throughout graduate school has been on One Health policy – from developing a One Health framework for integrated service delivery in Kenya to policy recommendations that combat the impact of COVID-19 among pastoralists. I have consistently worked at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health and policy to investigate sustainable solutions to problems that cross traditional disciplinary and international borders. I have strong qualitative analysis skills. These include conducting semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions, participatory epidemiology techniques, and proficiency with thematic and content analysis and grounded theory. Through leading interdisciplinary and international research teams, my work as a small-animal veterinarian, and student leadership roles, I have developed excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, confidence in decision-making, and an ability to contribute to short-and long-term organizational and group goals. While my education has covered ecology, conservation biology, veterinary medicine, public health, and conservation medicine, my research and interests have intersected at One Health policy in the context of livestock production systems. My career goals include working with communities, harnessing systems thinking, transdisciplinary research, and emphasizing equity and knowledge-to-action principles to tackle complex health challenges.
