About Evan Schramm
I am a trained pharmacologist and molecular biologist seeking new opportunities as a research scientist. I have completed my Master's of Science in Pharmacology from the University of Michigan and graduated with highest distinction from the University of Illinois majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I have four years of experience as a researcher in academic labs working mostly on opioid receptor pharmacology and insecticide metabolism by P450 enzymes. My education and research experience has created a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that I wish to continue building on.

In the laboratory of Dr. John Traynor, we collectively study the opioid receptor (class A Gprotein-coupled receptors) signaling system both in vitro and in vivo to understand more about their natural role in the body as well as how signaling by these receptors can be manipulated using opioid drugs for the treatment of pain, addiction, and depression. More specifically, my work focuses on characterizing and understanding the pharmacology of recently discovered allosteric modulators that act on some of these opioid receptors. Further research and development of new prototype allosteric modulators will be conducted with the intention of generating new compounds with high affinity, high receptor selectivity, and with variable efficacies to study their pharmacodynamic properties, use as research tools, and their potential role in the clinic for the treatment of pain, substance abuse, and mood disorders. Reducing side effects such as constipation, abuse liability, tolerance, dependence, and overdose risk without losing the analgesic properties of traditional painkillers make the development of allosteric modulators an appealing avenue to produce novel medicines and convey significant improvements in clinical pain management and patient well-being.
Graduate Student Instructor
One semester was spent as a graduate student instructor (GSI) for Pharmacology 601: Quantitative Principles of Pharmacology, a core course for pharmacology graduate students. As the GSI for this course for the Fall 2016 semester, I gained experience tutoring students both one-on-one and in large groups. I also wrote some of the exam and homework assignment questions in addition to grading these. Ultimately, serving as a GSI for that semester gave me practical experience in teaching, tutoring, and preparing course materials
Graduate Student Research Assistant
As a rotation student in Dr. Lori Isom's lab, I assisted in a project to understand the functional consequences of variations mutations in the sodium channel subunit beta 1 (SCN1b) and how they may contribute to Dravet's Syndrome.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
As an undergraduate in Dr. Mary Schuler's lab, I investigated the functional impact of various mutations on insecticide metabolizing P450 enzymes. The specific mutations investigated had been linked to insecticide resistance in malaria containing mosquito populations.
