I have had the opportunity to work as an intern and now a law clerk at a law firm that represents people that have been harmed due to someone else's negligence. When I was growing up I knew that my father was an attorney and vaguely knew that he went to court and sometimes to trial. But only when I went to observe a case that my father was trying did I get a glimpse of what really goes on in the legal profession. The pre-trial preparation. The organizing of the evidence, the trial lists. Meeting with clients and preparing for their testimony. Creating PowerPoint presentations for the opening and closing of the case. All of these things I saw and helped with to a small degree gave me an appreciation of how much work was really involved in the legal field. I believe that my experience in the legal field translates well into other business ventures and mediums.

As a member of my Jewish fraternity I was given the responsibility of planning social events for my chapter. I had to organize publicity, catering, decorating and advertising of the events. Some of the events were tied to the touchstones of the college experience, homecoming, fraternity sorority parties and parents weekends. My other role was to fund raise for charitable cause such as the Alzheimer's Association. I planned a charity walk with the Sigma Kappa sorority. Our members carried pinwheels and obtained sponsorship from members of the community, friends and family members. Our fund raising included a talent show, a volley ball tournament, a pie sale and commemorative t-shirts. The result of all of efforts were that raised much needed proceeds that went to the Alzheimer’s Association. My junior year we were able to raise $17,532 dollars for our philanthropy, which was an increase of almost $9,000 dollars from the previous year. This experience really instilled in me that if you put in the effort and make smart choices you will succeed in your goal.

I applied for this summer life guarding job thinking that it would be nice to be out in the sun on the beach. I soon learned that much responsibility came with the job. I had to observe the water at all times. I was responsible for interfacing with the residents of the community to make sure all was well and everyone was taken care of. Knowing that I was assigned the duty of making sure that everyone was safe in and out of the water made my committment for the job grow. I also had to hone my personal skills. At times I would be dealing with adults and seniors and the next moment I would be reinforcing safety rules with kids. This job was a great stepping stone to other opportunities. I still look back on my time as a lifeguard and appreciate my chance to protect and serve my patrons.
