About Evan Keating
Have you ever stopped to think about just how vast and mind-blowing our universe is? That alone should be enough to ignite a passion for space exploration. But if that doesn't do it for you, let me tell you about all the amazing possibilities that come with venturing out into the great beyond. We're talking about discovering new planets, possibly finding extraterrestrial life (how crazy would that be?), and even potentially finding new materials and precious resources that could solve some of Earth's problems. And let's not forget the sheer excitement of being able to settle on other planets like Mars, or going back to the Moon, and creating new possibilities for humanity.I'm so grateful and lucky to have been part of something so incredibly groundbreaking in my career! To further develop this passion, we need to promote education and awareness about space exploration from an early age – show kids just how cool it is through interactive exhibits, engaging talks, and hands-on experiences. Let them dream big and encourage their curiosity because who knows where it might lead us? The possibilities are endless, my friend! This is why my career has been such a great journey, allowing me to contribute to aerospace system design programs and the overall management of engineering processes, to support deep space mission planning, spacecraft operations, satellite navigation, and new technology conceptualization. I've also been able to develop advanced skills in:• Mechanical design of space flight systems and solutions that gather data for driving continuous improvement, mitigate risks, and providing key insights to mission-critical manufacturing and high-volume production plans.• Leading all mechanical design and system integration efforts in association with radar systems, satellite and cube satellite payload design programs, using CAD software and programming languages (SolidWorks and MATLAB).• Guiding the design, development, and evaluation of hardware systems and support equipment in spacecraft missions, launch vehicle operations, orbital satellite navigation programs, and deep space flight dynamics services. • Coordinating technical reviews, dFMEAs, and other risk identification and mitigation activities such as conducting thermal and structural analysis (Thermal Desktop and ANSYS) throughout the spacecraft development life cycle.• Providing navigation operations support including spaceflight technology development and software deployment, interfacing with customers on mission formulation, operations management, and program scheduling challenges.

System Engineer
Mechanical Engineer Iii – Innovative Aerospace Division
We develop solutions for remote sensing and earth observation, intelligence gathering, communications and navigation, as well as space-enabled science and exploration. Two of the satellites we’ve developed are Mango One and Mango Two.- We are a subset of Jacobs’ new Divergent Solutions, which directly aligns with its Data Solutions growth accelerator, serving as the core foundation for developing and delivering next-generation cloud, cyber, data and digital technologies.- My team focuses on portfolios of RF ground systems and air sensors, and my expertise is in space-related solutions (spaceborne radar payload proposal and execution phase) for commercial customers, the federal government, and DoD clients. - As a Mechanical Engineer III, I’m responsible for the mechanical design of multi-panel payload antenna and radar array assemblies, including 5 custom hardware components, the design requirements for the electronics board and modules, structural FEA, and thermal analysis.• Oversaw the entire front-end payload design, which required guiding 4 mechanical engineers to a flight-worthy design for the critical design review in Oct. 2023, while managing their schedule and writing all progress reports.• Led the entire harnessing design efforts from the preliminary design review stage, to designing 38 power and signal cables, and managing a team of 2 test engineers to properly assess the harness and make sure it was space rated. • I’m currently in charge of mechanical drawings, system requirements, payload design considerations, board design, payload assembly and harness strength analysis, and risk management on the mechanical side of the program.
System Engineer – Joint Polar Satellite System (Jpss)
The JPSS supports the latest generation of U.S., European and Japanese polar-orbiting, non-geosynchronous, satellites designed to monitor global environmental conditions and collect data related to weather, atmosphere, and oceans. As a Systems Engineer, I was responsible for providing operations support and fight sustainment for the JPSS Common Ground Systems (CGS), which is a global system designed to support current and future weather and environmental sensing satellite missions.• Successfully delivered advanced onsite support and created a clear line of communication with the public sector customers to ensure effective coordination among all parties involved in the program and secure mission success.• Maintained the telemetry and scientific data flow for the operating weather satellites and provided 24/7 technical support for system-related issues to ensure ground systems can process the flight data relayed from the satellites.• Developed multiple guides to help new team members quickly identify the root cause of issues while providing practical support for the customer. This involved building scripts that automated the daily customer support tasks.
Undergraduate Research Assistant – Advanced Bio-Fabrication Laboratory
I was involved in developing a 3D printing method to fabricate a model brain prototype, with a particular interest in engineering a method of producing a stimulus when a neurosurgeon has interacted with vital areas of the brain. The primary approach involved using a chemical-based solution that would change colors depending on the amount of pressure applied to the area. The chemical solution involved using phenolphthalein, and essential solutions were qualitatively tested to measure their color-changing abilities to place these chemicals on the model brain at specific, imperative locations. I was also in charge of creating the mechanical test that would apply the pressure to the given area and indicate the amount of pressure that would cause damage to the brain area that is being simulated. The overall experiment involved testing the effect of pressure on the color resulting from the reaction of 0.00001M sodium hydroxide with phenolphthalein. The following sets were followed:• Varying pressures were applied to the reaction by utilizing stacks of pennies in differing amounts.• The general color and the reaction speed that resulted from phenolphthalein's reaction with 0.00001M sodium hydroxide were determined. • The colors of the reactions were examined more closely utilizing the RGB color model. • Finally, the CIE76 algorithm calculated the color difference between the reactions obtained with pressure and the reaction without any pressure applied.
Engineering Intern – Gas Power & Energy Sector
HBK is a leader in the design, coordination, permitting and construction support of utility projects and has successfully performed engineering for a complete spectrum of utility infrastructure projects, including but not limited to, gas, electric, water, sewer and telecommunication applications. As a mechanical engineer (intern), I provided assistance in the design of gas lines for a large client in the energy sector. This included performing field visits to verify construction was conducted in accordance with design requirements, as well as creating a digital map of project locations, and performing calculations in redesigning an HVAC system for an indoor pool system.
Mechanical Engineering Intern – National Security Solutions (Radar Design)
KeyW is now Jacobs. KeyW was an innovative national security solutions provider with advanced technologies and solutions in cyber; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; and analytics span the full spectrum of customer missions requiring enhanced capabilities. As a mechanical engineer (intern), I was responsible for supporting the design process for cabling, power, and RF systems used in radar packages. This included crafting the technical documents that allowed for the proper assembly of aircraft racks, and assisting in the creation of radar systems for mounting on satellites, as well as performing data analysis on various materials and assessing hardware for radar mounts.
