Mental Health Emergency Services Unit (Emergency Department)• Provide assessment, stabilization, and treatment to clients ages 12 and up presenting in the emergency department with mental health issues, substance use, withdrawal, and overdose• Work with clients presenting with an array of mental health conditions including schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorder, substance abuse/addiction, and others • Provide therapeutic interventions to clients experiencing acute crisis• Utilize motivational interviewing techniques for promoting behavioral change• Utilize relational skills to develop trust and form effective therapeutic relationships with clients• Work with relative autonomy in the admitting, transferring, discharging, and referring of clients• Utilize the nursing process to guide nursing actions and clinical decision-making• Work in collaboration with an interprofessional team comprised of psychiatrists and child-youth workers, and community services such as Durham Mental Health Services and Canadian Mental Health Association• Utilize verbal de-escalation techniques and restraints as indicated in accordance with the Mental Health Act
