Advisory Panel MemberThe key role of the Advisory Panel is to provide external challenge, critique and comment on HSIB’s work and processes.HSIB is made up of experienced safety investigators, led by the chief investigator Keith Conradi. While HSIB is funded by the Department of Health and hosted by NHS Improvement, it operates independently of them and organisations such as the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and NHS organisations.HSIB will investigate up to 30 safety incidents each year in order to provide meaningful safety recommendations and share learning across the whole of the healthcare system for the benefit of everyone who is cared for by it and works in it.

The Invited Reviews Service provided an independent perspective, where concerns were raised regarding the standards of care being delivered, patient safety issues or where validation and advice on the configuration of women’s services was required. Duties included being a single point of contact for reviews, providing project management support, liaising and working alongside senior clinicians, attending reviews to provide expert support, report editing and writing, ensuring data protection and information governance policies were adhered to, sharing intelligence across the organisation for policy and educational development and working collaboratively with other Royal Colleges and regulatory organisations. I also established and ran a training and development programme for clinical assessors.

As a partner member of the Midwifery Committee, I played a valuable role providing expertise and experience from a lay perspective. The Midwifery Committee was constituted under the provisions of the Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001. The Committee had a broad remit to advise the Council on any matters affecting midwifery and to monitor professional and policy developments in the healthcare field affecting midwifery practice.With a good understanding of regulation, the ability to work with a range of partners and stakeholders and excellent communication skills the Midwifery Committee had a very significant role in shaping the future of midwifery regulation.

I was an active member of the PPI working group for the Research Design Services for the South Central Region of the country. This role involved contributing to and overseeing the directional work plan of the PPI element of the Research Design Services South Central. The role also entailed actively promoting the value of patient and public involvement in research proposals. I have co produced best practice documents, facilitated workshops and provided training to researchers on how to ensure that they have fully engaged and involved patient’s perspectives prior to submitting their proposal to the NIHR.

As part of the Young People’s Participation and Advocacy Team my role was to ensure that the RCPCH is recognised as an expert in relation to the safe, ethical and meaningful participation of children and young people in health matters impacting their lives. I supported Paediatricians (and wider health professionals) to facilitate the participation of children and young people to advocate for improved child health policies, legislation, service design and child health standards across the UK and wider. I also ensured that children and young people influenced the training, professional development and assessment of Paediatricians in the UK

My role was to provide emotional support for parents (who have had a premature or sick baby) on our helpline and through email enquiries. Alongside this I was also involved in undertaking literature reviews on scientific papers in neonatal medicine and presenting this in a plain English format as a fact sheet. I was responsible for producing some of our parent literature, which included resource packs. I also played an active role in facilitating focus groups with parents and providing training to volunteers who wished to support new parents. I advocated on behalf of parents, representing their views and experiences for publications, research proposals, steering committee groups and at health related conferences. I had the lead role in implementing the user involvement strategy for the organisation. I was also the designated child safeguarding officer for the organisation.
