I represent GoodWeave in the UK, the international not-for-profit organisation which works to bring supply chain transparency to the rug, home textile and apparel industry and stop the widespread use of child labour. GoodWeave works with importers, retailers and producers to end child, bonded and forced labour in manufacturing supply chains. It has pioneered and runs the internationally acclaimed GoodWeave labelling scheme, which includes mapping informal supply chains, right down to home workers, audits, random inspections and the individual certification of selected products made in South East Asia. GoodWeave rescues children found working, providing them with an education, financial support and the chance of a childhood. In this way, the cycle of poverty can be broken and childhoods restored. In addition, support to local communities helps to raise the awareness of the importance of an education and the fairer treatment of adults in work. I liaise with UK based companies which import rugs and/or home textiles, directly or indirectly, from India, Nepal or Afghanistan, looking to ensure no children are used in the production of their products and the rights of adult workers are respected. I facilitate the licensing of these companies as part of the GoodWeave labelling scheme and instigate the continuous certification of their rugs and the random and unannounced inspection of relevant supply chains.Today, an increasing number of consumers abhor the use of child labour and want proven assurances about who actually made the products they purchase. GoodWeave offers the solution and delivers a labelling scheme that is both good for children and business.
